On Wednesday, the city of Las Vegas revealed that it has granted the initial construction permit to the Boring Company for an additional segment of the Vegas Loop. This new tunnel will connect the Tesla-operated underground network from the Las Vegas Convention Center to downtown Las Vegas.

The inaugural downtown station is planned to be constructed just north of The Strat, but no specific timeline has been provided.

“Visitors attending conventions will soon have the opportunity to conveniently hop into a vehicle to easily travel downtown for dinner, drinks, a museum visit, or to enjoy a performance at The Smith Center for the Performing Arts,” said Mayor Shelley Berkley in a public statement.

The Boring Company is aiming to extend its network to include multiple stops in downtown, in addition to providing access to the airport.

Earlier this week, Fontainebleau announced it has become the newest Strip resort featuring a Vegas Loop station. Located at level V-1 in the Fontainebleau’s south valet area, the station is currently offering complimentary rides to the four Las Vegas Convention Center stations, as well as Encore and Westgate.

However, it should be noted that Fontainebleau is not providing the $12 airport rides. This limited-time offer — priced at about a third of typical rideshare and taxi charges — continues to be available solely from Resorts World and Westgate. These rides transport passengers through the completed segments of the Vegas Loop before navigating surface streets to terminals 1 or 3 at the airport.

The $12 airport ride promotion will remain active until the dual tunnels linking the Vegas Loop to the airport are finalized, which is anticipated to happen in the first quarter of this year.

Future Tunnel Developments

Upon completion of the 2.25-mile Airport Connector, trips to the airport will mainly occur underground. This connection will link to the University Center Loop, which is currently being built beneath Paradise Road and will include stations at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas, the Howard Hughes Center, UNLV’s Thomas & Mack Center, and the Sphere.

The Vegas Loop has successfully excavated over 10 miles of tunnels, with approximately 4 miles now operational — linking stations at Encore, Resorts World, Westgate, and the Vegas Convention Center. Some routes, such as between Encore and Westgate, have utilized self-driving Teslas since October, although all currently operate with a human “safety driver” present.

Ultimately, the Boring Company aims to seamlessly connect the entire tourist area — ranging from Allegiant Stadium in the south to downtown Las Vegas in the north — through a comprehensive underground network consisting of 104 Vegas Loop stations that have already received approval from Clark County and the City of Las Vegas.
