According to Johnny Avello, the Sportsbook Director at DraftKings, sports bettors in Ontario exhibit remarkable sophistication, particularly in their betting choices for 2025.

“In general, their choices diverge from U.S. bettors in several aspects,” he noted. “For instance, Saquon Barkley topped the betting list for NFL TD scorers in Ontario, which is understandable given his scoring prowess. He’s a weekly bet. (Patrick) Mahomes ranks as the most wagered NFL player by handle, coming right after Josh Allen in the total number of bets. Vlad Guerrero (most wagered MLB player by handle) makes sense, as does Connor McDavid. Ontarians frequently place bets on the Chiefs, even when they don’t appear in the Super Bowl.

Ontario’s Top Bet: The Blue Jays

“The Dodgers are another hot choice. Bettors tend to favor successful teams. What makes the Dodgers so appealing in Ontario? Perhaps their consistent winning record. Their players are well-known and recognized.

“In reviewing betting activity, it’s clear that these bettors exhibit a high level of sophistication.”

DraftKings reports that the Top 10 most bet teams in Ontario for 2025 (by handle) included the Toronto Blue Jays, Oklahoma City Thunder, Toronto Maple Leafs, Los Angeles Dodgers, Kansas City Chiefs, Golden State Warriors, Buffalo Bills, Los Angeles Lakers, Denver Nuggets, and the Philadelphia Eagles.

NFL’s Unmatched Popularity

NFL events dominated wagering activity, with the top ten most bet events in Ontario all featuring NFL games in 2025. Canadian standout Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Oklahoma City Thunder ranked as the most bet NBA player and team, respectively.

Connor McDavid was identified as the most wagered NHL player, while the Toronto Maple Leafs emerged as the leading bet in hockey overall. Canadian teams made a significant impact, with both the Blue Jays and Maple Leafs ranking in the top three across all sports. Dominant NFL and NBA teams also made the cut, showcasing Ontario bettors’ keen interest in star athletes and championship contenders.

The highest bet games in 2025 by number of bets included Chiefs at Philadelphia Eagles on Feb. 9 (Super Bowl), Patriots at Buffalo Bills on Oct. 5, Packers at Dallas Cowboys on Sept. 28, Detroit Lions at Cincinnati Bengals on Oct. 5, and L.A. Chargers at New York Giants on Sept. 28.
