A previous Las Vegas showgirl is taking legal action against pop icon Taylor Swift, claiming the artist has unlawfully appropriated the brand she cultivated for over a decade. Reports from TMZ, which accessed the lawsuit, indicate that Maren Wade asserts Swift’s recent album has violated her rights regarding the brand “Confessions of a Showgirl.”

Wade, who holds a trademark for the term “Confessions of a Showgirl,” is seeking damages for trademark infringement, false representation, and unfair competition. She has requested a court order to prevent Swift, her team, her record label (UMG Recordings), and her merchandising associates from utilizing “The Life of a Showgirl” in any products or services.

From 2014 until late 2024 or early 2025, Wade penned a weekly piece titled “Confessions of a Showgirl” for the Las Vegas Weekly. This column provided an insider’s perspective on her experiences as a performer, featuring anecdotes about collaborating with renowned artists like Wayne Newton and Mariah Carey, hilarious mishaps, and her impressions of Madonna.

This column was subsequently transformed into a book, a podcast, and a solo comedic stage performance. Directed by Keith Thompson (Jersey Boys, Mamma Mia!, We Will Rock You), the show was staged in 2023 and 2024 in multiple Las Vegas venues, including Myron’s at The Smith Center, Notoriety at Neonopolis, and the Stirling Club. Wade even took the production to New York for an off-Broadway performance at the Laurie Beechman Theatre in 2024.

Swift Legal Response

In court filings submitted in California federal court on Monday, Wade contends that both her branding and Swift’s evoke a similar “overall commercial impression,” primarily due to the shared term “of a Showgirl.” She asserts that Swift’s team was aware, or should have been aware, of this similarity—especially since the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office had rejected Swift’s “The Life of a Showgirl” trademark application, citing potential for confusion with Wade’s trademark—but chose to proceed regardless.

Wade, who is registered under her real name Maren Flagg, possesses U.S. Trademark Registration No. 4,792,015, which was filed in May 2014 and officially registered on August 11, 2015. This trademark has achieved “incontestable status,” offering robust legal protection in trademark law.

Wade’s lawsuit also notes, as reported by TMZ, that Swift is not hesitant to enforce her own trademark rights through legal avenues when it benefits her.

Casino.org has reached out to Wade for comments across her social media platforms earlier on Monday, but has yet to receive a response. Any updates will be provided as they become available.
