Officials reported that gunshots erupted around 1:33 AM on December 10. Nearby police officers located on Washington Boulevard heard the gunfire and promptly proceeded to the location. The city’s ShotSpotter technology effectively pinpointed the source of the shots.

Upon arrival, officers found a 26-year-old male who had sustained gunshot injuries in front of a Royal Farms store, a convenience outlet popular for its fried chicken, located right across Russell Street from the casino.

The injured man was rushed to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Additionally, a 22-year-old male arrived at the same medical facility with gunshot wounds; he is currently in stable condition and is expected to recover.

Baltimore Police are soliciting any potential witnesses or individuals with information to reach out to detectives at 410-396-2100 or contact Metro Crime Stoppers at 1-866-7Lockup.

Casino Shooting Incidents

Although the shooting occurred outside the Horseshoe Casino, the gunfire was merely a few steps away from the casino floor managed by Caesars Entertainment. This incident follows closely behind the shooting of a 23-year-old man from Washington, DC, within MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Maryland, on December 3.

“Maryland casinos are experiencing a challenging month,” posted Larry Calhoun on his well-known X account, News From the Concrete, where he covers significant policing, fire, and EMS events throughout the Capital Beltway.

Caesars, which holds a 76% stake in CBAC Gaming, the entity managing Horseshoe Baltimore, has made significant investments in enhancing the area around the South Baltimore casino. The objective is to create a more attractive link between the casino and the city’s two professional sports stadiums.

The casino is involved in a Topgolf project, yet its earlier announcement of a mixed-use entertainment and hospitality development that would feature a 320-room hotel known as Walk @ Warner Street has not yet materialized.

Regardless, Horseshoe Baltimore is reporting a slight uptick in gaming revenue for 2025.

Up to November, the casino’s slots and table games generated $163.45 million from patrons, averaging around $14.8 million monthly. If December maintains this trend, the casino will surpass its 2024 revenue of $172.5 million.

Crime in Baltimore

Baltimore, often depicted as a city with high crime rates, was famously featured in HBO’s series, The Wire. While crime and murder rates have declined in recent times, many experts argue that the city may not be accurately reporting several law enforcement incidents.

Baltimore was identified among the cities where President Donald Trump indicated he might deploy the National Guard after gaining the presidency again. Trump claimed in September that he had “an obligation” to safeguard major cities, emphasizing that this isn’t a political issue.

The president characterized both Baltimore and Chicago as “hellholes,” although the promised federal deployment has yet to materialize.
