In a significant move by the US Justice Department and FBI, the darknet website belonging to the ransomware group that attacked MGM Resorts in August has been seized. A decryption tool has also been developed to aid victims and prevent ransom payments.

Following a disruption campaign against the Blackcat cyber gang, federal law enforcement, aided by international agencies, succeeded in seizing the darknet website and replaced its homepage with a notification of the seizure.

Tool Deployed

The FBI has not only hacked their hackers by seizing the website of the group believed to be behind the MGM attack, but also developed a decryption tool. The tool has already assisted over 500 affected victims in system restoration, saving at least $68 million in ransom demands.

Additionally, the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) warns that the holiday season is a busy time for cybercriminals and offers tips to consumers to secure their information and safeguard against potential attacks.
