A 27-year-old woman sustained critical injuries in a shooting incident at the parking garage of Ameristar Casino Resort Spa St. Charles in Missouri on Saturday.
The victim underwent surgery at a nearby hospital after being shot in the neck around 2:30 a.m., as reported by St. Louis, Mo. TV station KTVI.
The St. Charles Police Department responded to the incident promptly.
Despite being on the second floor of the parking garage, the victim managed to identify her attacker to the responding officers.
Shortly after, Calvin Koong, 50, of St. Louis, was arrested and charged with first-degree domestic assault, first-degree kidnapping, and armed criminal action.
He is currently held at the St. Charles County Jail with a bond set at $500K.
Authorities revealed that Koong was the victim’s boyfriend.
Victim Found in Vehicle
According to casino surveillance footage, the victim was discovered inside a car belonging to Koong, as per KSDK, a Missouri TV station.
She was seated in the driver’s seat with the door open. It appeared that the woman tried to exit the vehicle but was pushed back by Koong, leading to a struggle between them, stated the police.
Despite managing to escape the car, the woman collapsed a few feet away on the garage floor after being wounded.
Good Samaritans rushed to her aid, provided immediate medical assistance, and alerted the authorities.
Koong attempted to flee but was impeded by a concrete barrier within the parking garage.
A security guard from Ameristar Casino arrived shortly after and apprehended Koong.
Confession of the Crime
The guard detained the suspect, who admitted, “I shot her. I shot her,” to the guard. Koong later confessed to the police as well, as reported by KSDK.
Koong was taken into custody, and a firearm was found in his vehicle during a search. It was seized as evidence.
The case has been forwarded to local prosecutors, and Koong could face imprisonment if convicted.
The authorities did not disclose the motive behind the shooting.
The victim was taken to the hospital’s emergency room. Her current condition was not provided as of late Saturday, and details regarding her injuries were not immediately released by the police.
If the woman does not survive, the charges against Koong may be elevated.
