The sentencing for former NBA player Jontay Porter has been rescheduled for 2025.

The former Toronto Raptor was initially scheduled to be sentenced on Wednesday, but the date has been moved to May 20 in a Brooklyn courthouse after pleading guilty in July to conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

Match Manipulation

Porter pleaded guilty to manipulating two NBA games for gambling purposes while playing for the Raptors. The investigation revealed that prop bets involving Porter in Raptors games on January 26 and March 20 resulted in bettors winning due to unusual circumstances.

Porter withdrew from both games citing illness or injury, scoring no points and playing less than five minutes in each. Bettors who placed bets on the under in those categories ended up winning.

Lifetime Ban

In April, Porter was banned for life from the NBA, marking the first such incident since the legalization of sports gambling in the US.

A gaming law expert from a Toronto law firm mentioned to the Canadian Press that he anticipates a severe prison sentence and a fine for Porter, despite his cooperation with US authorities.

Expected Prison Term

“Given the premeditated and repeated misconduct by a public figure who should be a role model, Porter is likely to receive a harsh sentence,” said Peter Czegledy. “Although a gambling addiction was presented as a mitigating factor, it may not fully excuse his actions. The court is expected to carefully consider all aspects and could impose both a prison term and substantial financial penalties.”
