Shayne Sussman, aged 25, made the plea regarding the three counts of attempted murder before District Judge Susan Johnson.

He entered a plea under the Alford Doctrine, indicating that Sussman recognized the district attorney’s office had enough evidence for a conviction, but he maintains his innocence.

At his sentencing on November 26, Sussman could receive a sentence of up to 20 years in prison.

Assault on Two Employees

During the incident on August 3, Sussman reportedly stabbed one casino employee in the back, lungs, collarbone, and neck, as stated by prosecutors. The second employee who was stabbed by Sussman was a supervisor.

The security guard narrowly avoided being stabbed by Sussman, with prosecutors revealing that the guard was only inches away from the attack.

Sussman then fled into the casino and sat down outside a restaurant. As security guards approached him, he lunged at them and attempted to escape, according to the police.

A casino security guard intervened when Sussman threatened the guards with a knife. The guard shot and injured Sussman in the abdomen.

Sussman was quickly taken to University Medical Center (UMC) for urgent care. The two injured casino employees were also taken to UMC for emergency treatment, with both individuals surviving.

Witnesses and others hid under tables as the violence occurred in the casino, as reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Sussman Was Intoxicated

Prior to the stabbings, Sussman had consumed a significant amount of alcohol while attending a concert at the casino.

In fact, Sussman was described as being “so intoxicated that he clearly lost control of his faculties,” according to Thomas Ericsson, a Las Vegas-based criminal defense attorney representing Sussman.

“He will not be eligible for probation under our agreement,” Ericsson further informed the judge during the court proceedings.

Initially, Sussman faced multiple charges including attempted murder with the use of a deadly weapon, as well as battery charges with the use of a deadly weapon, resulting in substantial bodily harm, according to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD).

Several charges were dropped before Sussman entered the guilty plea under the Alford Doctrine.
