- Hard Rock is collaborating on an $850 million casino resort venture in Puerto Rico
- The casino resort is expected to commence construction this year and is set to open in 2029
Hard Rock International is expanding its reach into Puerto Rico, with the gaming and hospitality giant, owned by the Seminole Tribe of Florida, announcing an $850 million investment in San Juan.

The Hard Rock Hotel & Casino San Juan is a joint venture involving Hard Rock, Misla Hospitality Group, Stonecrest Investment Management, and The Interfin Companies. Misla and Stonecrest are local to Puerto Rico, while Interfin is based in Texas.
Construction is scheduled to begin later this year on the $850 million resort, which will have breathtaking views of San Juan Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. It will feature 415 hotel rooms and 58 luxury suites, along with 186 private residences.
“This facility will be inspired by the island’s rich cultural and musical heritage, showcasing stunning works from local artists. The San Juan resort will become part of the esteemed Hard Rock global hotel portfolio, offering exceptional entertainment and innovative amenities to modern travelers looking for unique hospitality experiences,” stated a release from Hard Rock.
The construction phase is projected to generate 2,500 job opportunities, with 1,250 permanent positions available upon completion.
Although a specific site for the resort has not been confirmed, local theories suggest it may be built on the former site of the deteriorated Department of Finance building adjacent to the San Juan Cruise Port Terminal 4. Hard Rock aims to unveil the San Juan complex by 2029.
The Island’s First Comprehensive Casino Experience
Puerto Rico has hosted casinos for many years, tracing back to the 1948 passage of the Games of Chance Act by the Legislative Assembly. This law was designed to boost tourism on the island at a time when US casino gambling was primarily confined to Las Vegas. Currently, Puerto Rico has 16 licensed casinos, all located within hotels and resorts. In 2020, sports betting was legalized at these casinos.
Many casinos in Puerto Rico are smaller, boutique venues with a limited selection of slot machines and table games. Among the larger casinos is Foxwoods El San Juan Casino at the Fairmount, which features 300 slots, 14 tables, and a DraftKings Sportsbook. Hard Rock’s San Juan is being marketed as the “first fully integrated casino in Puerto Rico,” promising a “holistic travel-entertainment experience.”
In contrast, Hard Rock Punta Cana in the neighboring Dominican Republic boasts over 400 slot machines and nearly 40 table games.
Hard Rock’s Family-Oriented Resort
Hard Rock San Juan aims to cater to guests of all ages, featuring amenities such as a kids club, an arcade, and three swimming pools. The property will also include a “curated teen hangout.”
Remaining true to its roots, Hard Rock Puerto Rico will showcase music memorabilia, highlighting the island’s musical legacy. The resort will house several event venues and a recording studio designed to “enhance the island’s music culture.”
“Music embodies the essence of both Hard Rock and Puerto Rico, making this collaboration an ideal match,” remarked Jeff Hook, COO of Hard Rock International. “We’re proud to create a destination that honors Puerto Rico’s vibrant music and arts scene, and we eagerly anticipate welcoming visitors and locals to cherish the island’s dynamic cultural landscape.”
