The betting lines are competitive, but the Carolina Hurricanes enter Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final against the Vegas Golden Knights this evening (June 2) as the favored team.

At BetMGM, the odds place the Hurricanes at -149, while the Golden Knights are +125. The majority of Moneyline bets and handle are favoring Vegas—58% and 68%, respectively. The Hurricanes are the betting favorites to claim the series and the Stanley Cup, sitting at -150 at DraftKings, whereas the Golden Knights are at +130.

“This is going to be an exciting betting series,” commented Johnny Avello, Director of Race and Sports Operations for DraftKings.

The “Torts” Influence

The Vegas Golden Knights have built an impressive playoff reputation, which may contribute to their higher ticket sales and handle percentage, Avello noted.

Since joining the NHL as an expansion franchise in the 2017-18 season, Las Vegas has reached the Stanley Cup Finals three times, including a Cup victory in 2023.

Golden Knights GM Kelly McCrimmon spoke about the team’s depth and its recent commitment to defensive strategies under head coach John Tortorella, affectionately known as “Torts,” who took the helm on March 29 after Bruce Cassidy’s departure.

Enhanced Roster Depth

Most NHL teams usually have one standout line, but the Golden Knights boast significant depth with players like Jack Eichel, Mitch Marner (the frontrunner for the Conn Smythe Trophy at DraftKings this morning at +155), Mark Stone, Tomas Hertl, Pavel Dorofeyev, Ivan Barbashev, William Karlsson, and Brett Howden.

“Bettors view (the Golden Knights) as an underdog, but the outcome isn’t clear-cut,” Avello stated. “Carolina lacks the experience that the Golden Knights possess.”

“This is a tough series to analyze. The advantage could lie with Carolina and their defense or with Vegas and their offense. The betting line for (Vegas) is particularly appealing to bettors.”

Appealing Betting Lines

The Hurricanes eliminated the Montreal Canadiens decisively in their previous series within five games and hold an impressive 12-1 playoff record. Meanwhile, the Vegas Golden Knights swept the Colorado Avalanche in four games in a significant upset, given that the Avalanche had secured the Presidents’ Trophy for best regular season record.

Tonight, at DraftKings, the odds for Vegas are +130, while Carolina stands at -155.

Avello mentioned that DraftKings is “in a relatively stable position” regarding their liabilities with the Golden Knights compared to other recent Stanley Cup finalists.

“Locals in Vegas who frequent the casinos with sportsbooks like to bet on the Golden Knights, understanding that they are competitive,” he said. “While Vegas sportsbooks might feel the heat from these bets, we cover many jurisdictions, so we aren’t overwhelmed by Golden Knights money.”

Sharps Yet to Engage

Avello observed that sharp bettors haven’t engaged in this series yet, with the +130 likely lacking the value they seek, though this could shift with in-game betting tonight and as the series progresses beyond Game 1.

“Despite their popularity, Vegas isn’t quite in the same league as Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers,” pointed out Karry Shreeve, Head of Hockey at Caesars Sportsbook. “The presence of a top player significantly impacts betting interest.”

“Both the Hurricanes and Golden Knights are solid teams known for their quality gameplay, but they lack the flashy appeal that the Oilers have brought to recent Cups.”

Game 1 Player Props

Avello remarked that there isn’t much noteworthy on the player prop front at DraftKings, except for the over on Golden Knights goalie Carter Hart with 28.5 saves (-120).

At Caesars Sportsbook, Shreeve noted that Stone “is receiving considerable attention.”

According to Tonybet’s Sportsbook Manager Mārtiņš Korulis, Andrei Svechnikov of the Hurricanes is drawing strong interest in scoring and matchup markets.

“This indicates that bettors are seeking value and favorable odds instead of simply supporting the star players,” he commented. At this point, a Vegas Golden Knights championship wouldn’t be a disappointing outcome for Tonybet.

Balanced Betting Action

“We’ve observed wagers on both sides of the series, as well as various player and series-special markets, which has helped distribute exposure rather than concentrating it on just one outcome,” he added. “While there’s strong support for Vegas in the outright market, we’re also seeing significant action on Carolina-related player and series markets. Currently, the betting book is fairly balanced heading into the Final, so the outcome will depend more on high-paying player markets than solely on the series winner.”

Shreeve further emphasized that Caesars Sportsbook is well-positioned regardless of how the series unfolds, especially with the Avalanche now out of playoffs.

“The Avalanche were anticipated as the public favorite, and we’ve successfully avoided that outcome,” he concluded.
