Commencing this May, Ontario’s iGaming participants will have access to a consolidated self-exclusion platform with the introduction of BetGuard during the Responsible Gambling Council’s RGC Discovery conference held in Toronto.

Unified Self-Exclusion Solution

“The essence of BetGuard is straightforward,” stated Joseph Hillier, the President of iGaming Ontario. “If you seek a break from the entire regulated iGaming sphere, BetGuard allows you to do so seamlessly. Individuals aged 19 and above can opt out from all regulated iGaming activities in Ontario simultaneously.”

An online portal for BetGuard has been activated, hinting at its official launch in May 2026. The portal details how users can create an account, verify their identity, and select their preferred exclusion duration (options include six months, one year, five years, or a custom term).

Commitment to Responsible Gaming

This platform will provide players with additional resources, including links to organizations such as ConnexOntario and the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), where they can seek assistance if gambling issues arise.

According to the iGaming Ontario directory, there are currently 48 licensed operators in the province, featuring 82 different gaming websites.

In August 2024, iGaming Ontario announced the selection of Integrity Compliance 360 (IC360) and IXUP to construct a centralized self-exclusion framework for Ontario, highlighting IC360’s stature as a global frontrunner in delivering innovative compliance solutions within the iGaming sector.

IXUP, recognized for designing and operating Australia’s BetStop national self-exclusion system, was chosen as a partner for this crucial project.

Enhancing Existing Regulatory Measures

Currently, licensed operators in Ontario are mandated to offer their players a self-exclusion alternative. With the implementation of BetGuard, players will no longer need to visit multiple sites; instead, they can manage their self-exclusion through a single platform. Operators in Ontario must also comply with the Responsible Gambling Council’s RG Check certification process to maintain accreditation.

BetGuard adds another vital layer of protection for players in the province’s already robust responsible gaming infrastructure.

“Operators would have appreciated this development earlier, but we are thrilled it’s finally here,” Paul Burns, the President and CEO of the Canadian Gaming Association, shared with Casino.org on Friday. “No operator wishes to see a self-excluded player appearing on their platform.”
