Authorities rescue 731 individuals allegedly forced into sex trafficking at an illegal Philippine Offshore Gaming Operator (POGO), as reported by the Philippine News Agency.
The illegal enterprise was reportedly orchestrated by the return of Smart Web Technology Corp, a company previously licensed as a POGO. The activities were brought to light when police raided a six-story building in Pasay City, situated close to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.
The building, which served as the center of this operation, included nine karaoke rooms, a fully equipped pharmacy with a resident doctor, and a restaurant. However, victims were found living in deplorable conditions.
The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) facilitated the raid, and authorities are now providing necessary support and rehabilitation services.
There is a growing demand for a complete review of POGOs and licensing procedures. Many critics argue for stricter oversight and enforcement to prevent future human trafficking incidents. Some even call for the banning of online gambling.
The campaign is currently being debated in Congress and has gained support from various civic and police organizations.
Smart Web Technology
Smart Web Technology Corp, formerly licensed as a POGO, had its license revoked due to noncompliance with regulations. The organization continued its illegal operations under a different name after the introduction of PAGCOR’s new Internet Gaming License scheme. This allowed the criminal group to prey on vulnerable individuals without detection.
The revelation of Smart Web Technology Corp’s ability to operate under different identities raises concerns about the effectiveness of regulatory measures in the Philippines. Authorities and regulatory bodies must reassess and strengthen their mechanisms to prevent the exploitation of legal loopholes.
The case also highlights the importance of international cooperation in combating transnational crimes. Collaborative efforts between the Philippines and other nations will be crucial in dismantling similar criminal networks operating across borders.
