- Florida authorities report that a 60-year-old man attempted to steal a Corvette at Hard Rock Hollywood.
- The individual has an extensive criminal record, including prior theft offenses.
A Miami Gardens resident, aged 60, allegedly impersonated a police officer while trying to steal a Chevrolet Corvette at the valet area of Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino yesterday afternoon.
Around 3:30 PM EST, officers from the Seminole Police Department were at the scene when valet staff called out for assistance. They informed the officer on duty that a man, dressed in a polo shirt featuring Florida Department of Corrections markings, had jumped into a running Corvette and sped away.
“That’s not his car!” an attendant reportedly warned the police.
The officer promptly maneuvered his cruiser to block the Corvette’s exit. The driver, identified as Angel Emilio Diez, was seen discarding a marijuana cigarette during the incident.
Diez claims he obtained the Florida Department of Corrections shirt from a thrift store and was not impersonating a police officer.
Theft Prevented
Broward County prosecutors have filed four counts against Diez, including grand theft auto, impersonation of a law enforcement officer, trespassing, and tampering with physical evidence. The charges for grand theft auto, impersonation, and tampering are classified as third-degree felonies.
The trespassing charge arises from Diez’s prior lifetime ban from the Seminole Hard Rock property. The tampering charge pertains to his attempt to conceal the marijuana cigarette during the police operation.
Currently, Diez is held at Broward County’s Main Jail. Initially set at a $3,750 bond, recent court records indicate that the bond has been revoked, and there is no scheduled hearing at this time.
Diez’s criminal history is extensive. In November 2023, he was convicted of a third-degree felony for the unlawful use of personal identification and a misdemeanor for petty theft. He also faced misdemeanor petit theft charges last year but did not attend his court date.
At the time of the Corvette theft attempt, police confirmed that Diez had an outstanding warrant from a charge filed in 2024.
Potential Jail Sentence
Should Diez be convicted of grand theft auto, he might face a significant prison term, especially considering the extensive camera surveillance at the Hard Rock that will likely aid the prosecution. Under Florida law, any form of motor vehicle theft is categorized as grand theft auto, irrespective of the vehicle’s value.
A conviction for third-degree grand theft could lead to a maximum of five years imprisonment. The charge may potentially escalate to a second or first-degree felony, as third-degree grand theft typically applies to thefts involving items valued up to $20,000.
Police have not disclosed details regarding the model year, variant, or condition of the black Corvette that Diez is accused of attempting to steal.
