- Eleven-member baccarat team orchestrated an elaborate cheating operation in Zurich
- Concealed smartphone camera used to track card sequences for baccarat
- Casino surveillance footage unveiled the fraud after an unusual $180K win
In March 2024, a collaboration of 11 card cheats managed to pilfer nearly $180K from Swiss Casinos Zurich — nearly executing their plan without detection.

Despite being the most extensive casino fraud in the history of Switzerland, it received little media coverage at the time aside from a German-language documentary, How to Cheat a Casino, released last summer. The case gained notoriety recently when the investigative security team behind the breakthrough was recognized at the World Game Protection Conference in Las Vegas.
Now, Casino.org brings you exclusive insights into what transpired in Zurich.
‘The Chinese Eleven’
Located in the city center, Swiss Casinos Zurich is just a stone’s throw from Bahnhofstrasse, one of the world’s priciest shopping streets. Its exterior facade may appear standard, resembling an ordinary downtown office building.
However, once inside, the atmosphere shifts to luxury. A golden-lit escalator transports visitors to the gaming floor on the second story. On March 25, 2024, this was precisely where a cadre of Chinese nationals — later dubbed “the Chinese Eleven” by prosecutors — was headed.
They didn’t enter all at once. The individuals checked into the casino independently at various times throughout the day, either alone or in minor groups. They dressed casually, engaged in roulette and blackjack, and socialized at the bar.
Then, around 10 p.m., they expressed a desire to play punto banco. This request raised no eyebrows; the baccarat variant is extremely popular with Chinese players and is the primary game in Macau, and the casino was eager to comply.
Stakes Suddenly Surge
The game commenced typically. They engaged in moderate stakes at first, enjoying a lively atmosphere filled with laughter and banter with the dealer. At one stage, a player escalated the stakes by betting up to 5,000 Swiss francs per hand (approximately $6,500), a stark shift from the earlier modest bets.

The man struck it rich, and others eagerly joined in, hoping to capitalize on his winning streak. Just a few hands later, the stakes decreased again,. After a final round, the group cashed out with nearly $180K in winnings and exited the venue.
Substantial wins like this automatically prompt a security review at Swiss Casinos. The surveillance team sensed foul play and embarked on meticulous analysis of the footage to assess the betting patterns.
They soon deduced that the events had likely been meticulously orchestrated for months. Footage revealed that members of the group had been frequenting the casino weeks before the heist, scouting for security camera placements. Some of the “Chinese Eleven” had visited just two days prior to the incident.
A Contest of Nines
The objective in baccarat is to wager on the hand closest to nine. Aces count as one, while all face cards and tens equal zero points, and other cards hold their face value.
Occasionally in punto banco, after shuffling, players are invited to cut the deck. This involves inserting a plastic cutting card to create a break before cards are slid into the dealing shoe.
During the Zurich game, players convinced the dealer to hold the deck with his left hand during the cut, representing a harmless superstition. Such requests are common among baccarat enthusiasts. However, this was no mere superstition — it was a pivotal element of their strategy.
The Distraction Technique
Security personnel later noted that when it was time for one player to cut the deck, the rest of the group launched a coordinated distraction, bombarding the dealer and nearby staff with queries and demands.

During those crucial seconds, the player quickly placed the cut card atop the deck while subtly fanning a portion of the deck beneath it with his thumb, momentarily revealing the card values.
Investigators later discovered that the individual’s smartphone had been altered with a miniature camera at the top edge, enabling it to film the cards.
He didn’t need to record the entire deck — merely capturing the sequence of 20 to 40 cards was sufficient for gaining a competitive edge.
Given that a baccarat shoe takes approximately 60 to 90 minutes to complete a round, he could easily depart, review the footage on his phone, memorize the sequence, and anticipate when that run of cards would reappear in play. The rest of the group only needed to mirror his bets when he increased his stakes.
Critically, since the dealer was holding the cards in his left hand, the deck faced the player instead of the dealer. Therefore, when the player fanned the edges of the cards, the printed indices — numbers and suits — briefly became visible. Normally, with the standard orientation, these corners would remain blank.
A Single Significant Error
The scheme was daring and intricately executed. However, the group made a crucial error: they returned for a second round.
Two days later, they showed up at Swiss Casinos Zurich to play punto banco again — and this time, law enforcement was waiting for them.
CDC Gaming reports that the so-called “baccarat cut-card scam” originated in Macau before proliferating globally. According to data recovered from the ringleader’s device, the Chinese Eleven had implemented the scam previously in France and Austria.
Many group members resided in Italy, where they held low-wage jobs in the textile sector, as detailed in How to Cheat a Casino.
Respect Earned
The eleven perpetrators were held in pre-trial custody ranging from 41 to 105 days. Ultimately, they received suspended sentences for deceit. The casino has thus far managed to recuperate most, but not all, of the embezzled funds.
“Once I fully grasped everything, including the roles played by individual accomplices, I must admit, they truly put in a remarkable effort,” remarked casino manager Marcus Jost in the documentary.
“They devised an intricate plan to mislead us with their diversion tactics and so forth. There were genuinely clever minds at work behind this operation.”
