Recently, Q Casino unveiled its new $75 million hotel, The Key Hotel. This seven-story establishment offers 90 rooms and is expected to significantly enhance the attractiveness of the casino, which boasts over 500 slot machines, 17 live dealer tables, and a sportsbook.

“This elevates our capability to deliver an exceptional experience and connect with a wider audience, including business travelers and casual gamers,” said Anthony Williams, president and CEO of Q Casino + Resort, in an interview with KCRG.

The Key Hotel is part of Hilton’s Tapestry Collection, showcasing unique and boutique hotels that are closely linked to their local area.

Owned by the City of Dubuque, Q Casino serves as a funding source for local charities. Since its inception in 1985, the casino has contributed over $244 million to nonprofits in the region.

Dubuque as a Destination

Located at the intersection of Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin borders, Dubuque lies alongside the Mississippi River and serves as the county seat for the Tri-State Area.

Q Casino is striving for a rebound, as its gaming revenue from the 2025 fiscal year reached approximately $46.3 million, a modest 5% increase from the previous year. However, this remains nearly 13% lower than in 2022 and 8% less than 2021.

The casino is also contending with emerging competition.

The Hard Rock Casino, which opened in Rockford, IL, in August 2024, features 1,300 slot machines, 50 live dealer tables, a poker room, and a Hard Rock Bet Sportsbook, rapidly achieving success in the Chicagoland market with a gross gaming revenue of $143.7 million within its first year.

Meanwhile, construction is ongoing for the $275 million Cedar Crossing Casino in Cedar Rapids, which is set to launch in December 2026.

Although Hard Rock Rockford and Cedar Crossing lack on-site lodging for now, the Q Casino will have a competitive advantage by offering both gaming and accommodation in one location.

‘Strategic Expansion’

Williams believes the investment in the hotel will be a pivotal element for Q Casino’s growth strategy.

“We have confidence in this project and expect to see a solid return on our investment,” Williams stated. “Our objective is to elevate earnings potential significantly. Growth is essential,” he added.
