From the moment the Minnesota Vikings scheduled their initial free-agent meeting with Kyler Murray in March, it seemed clear that he was destined for the starting quarterback role.
According to league sources, head coach Kevin O’Connell, who played a pivotal role in bringing the former first-overall pick on board, was committed to customizing the offensive strategy to suit Murray’s agile and compact playing style, and that is indeed how matters unfolded.
There was no real competition from recent first-round pick J.J. McCarthy, and once Murray joined the team, it became clear that this “quarterback battle” was essentially decided.
“O’Connell was completely focused on Kyler. He wanted him,” remarked an agent familiar with the free-agent landscape concerning another top quarterback.
McCarthy quickly lost traction in Minnesota, demonstrating a frenetic playing style that often bordered on chaotic and struggled with decision-making and touch on his throws.
He faced challenges with his erratic development and displayed moodiness, as reported by team insiders, ultimately failing to establish rapport with the team’s star players.

Moreover, Dolphins owner Stephen Ross, a well-known Michigan booster, has observed McCarthy elevate the program, which could influence potential interest from Miami.
Another executive proposed the Philadelphia Eagles as a potential buy-low opportunity, especially given uncertainty around starter Jalen Hurts’ role. Eagles GM Howie Roseman has been conducting thorough evaluations of Brendan Sorsby regarding his potential draft inclusion, as it’s known they often seek developing quarterbacks.
