More than two weeks after a tragic shooting at the Kickapoo Lucky Eagle Casino Hotel, the tribal facility has initiated new safety measures to enhance the security of the establishment.
Local reports, including those from News 4 San Antonio, an NBC News affiliate, indicate that a concrete barrier has been erected in front of the casino’s main entrance, marking the site where one individual was found deceased, with others suffering severe injuries, following the events of September 27.
The Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas, which operates this casino, has also augmented its security with the installation of mobile guard stations, an increase in armed personnel, and a vehicle screening mechanism designed to detect and assess suspicious behavior before allowing entry to guests.
The Kickapoo Lucky Eagle Casino operates as a Class I and II tribal casino featuring 3,300 electronic bingo machines. Under federal Indian gaming regulations, the facility is also authorized to offer bingo and poker games.
This venue is located just north of the border with Mexico in Eagle Pass, Texas.
Unclear Motive
As of now, the reason behind the lone assailant’s actions at the Lucky Eagle around 11:45 PM on the night of Saturday, September 27, remains unclear. A swift investigation led to the apprehension of Keryan Jones, a 34-year-old from San Antonio.
Jones is currently being held on two charges of capital murder, with a bail set at $5.1 million.
His alleged actions resulted in the deaths of Marcus Antley, 66, a retired customs and border agent, and Alicia Sanchez, 32, a mother of five.
Federal investigation agencies such as the FBI, DEA, and ICE are actively involved in the inquiry into this violent crime, with assistance from the Maverick County Sheriff’s Department, Texas Department of Public Safety, Eagle Pass Police Department, and the Texas Rangers.
As the Kickapoo Lucky Eagle operates on sovereign Native land, local laws are primarily enforced by the Kickapoo Tribal Police; however, serious offenses such as capital murder are typically subject to investigation and prosecution in collaboration with federal and state authorities.
Despite ongoing investigations, the exact motive remains undisclosed, with investigators mentioning that the accused shooter exhibited a “quiet” personality. Neighbors described Jones to local media as “a really chill guy.”
Business as Usual
In spite of the bolstered security measures, operations at the Kickapoo Lucky Eagle Casino Hotel have returned to normal. The casino continues to celebrate its recent winners on social media and is hosting a range of Halloween-themed events throughout the month, including an opportunity to win a 2025 GMC Sierra 2500 HD ATX truck.
Notably, the September shooting occurred shortly after the casino presented a 2025 Mercedes E350 luxury sedan as a prize.
