Two young suspects are now in custody following their involvement in a hit-and-run collision last month. This incident resulted in the death of a retired California police chief as he was riding a bicycle on a Las Vegas street.

According to the Las Vegas police, the driver and his passenger intentionally targeted 64-year-old Andreas “Andy” Probst during the incident that occurred on August 14. Probst, the retired chief of the Bell, California police department, was fatally injured in the collision.

The tragic incident occurred at the intersection of Tenaya Way and Centennial Parkway, approximately 16 miles away from the Las Vegas Strip. Eyewitnesses reported that one of the suspects asked the other if he was prepared before the collision took place.

According to a statement from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) quoted by NBC News, “The individuals pulled directly behind Probst and ran him over, as they fled the scene and laughed.”

A video captured by the passenger in the car revealed one of the suspects saying, “yeah, yeah, yeah hit his a**,” just moments before the crash.

The impact of the collision caused Probst to be thrown onto the car’s windshield and hood before landing on the pavement. He sustained critical injuries and was later pronounced dead at University Medical Center.

The Clark County District Attorney, Steve Wolfson, expressed confidence in achieving justice in this case after a thorough investigation is completed and the appropriate charges are filed.

“I am confident that justice will be served in this matter once the investigation is complete and the appropriate charges have been filed,” said Wolfson in a recent statement.

Prosecutors in Las Vegas are seeking to charge the 17-year-old driver of the car as an adult. The car involved in the collision, a stolen Hyundai, belonged to the driver, as confirmed by the police.

The 17-year-old suspect has been apprehended and charged with open murder for the collision. He is currently in custody, and additional charges may be brought against him. The passenger in the case has also been arrested and will face charges of open murder. Both suspects are teenagers.

Currently, both suspects are being held in Clark County Juvenile Hall.

This heinous crime has sparked widespread condemnation.

“We are devastated by the senseless murder of Andy,” expressed Taylor Probst, the daughter of the victim, in an interview with KLAS. “Andy’s life was stolen by two individuals who did not value the lives of others.”

Other Crimes

Authorities have revealed that the two teens are also suspects in multiple other crimes.

According to police reports, it has been discovered that these individuals were involved in another hit-and-run incident involving a bicyclist prior to the collision that resulted in Probst’s death,” reported NBC News.

The previous incident, which occurred approximately 30 minutes before the collision with Probst, involved a 72-year-old male bicyclist. This collision took place on Fort Apache Road near Washburn Road in Las Vegas.

Additionally, the two suspects were involved in another car crash on U.S. 95 when their stolen vehicle collided with a Toyota Corolla before the collision with Probst.

Authorities have stated that the two teens are believed to have stolen at least four cars before embarking on their crime spree.
