Las Vegas provides numerous ways to regret spending your money in every casino. This article serves as a cautionary tale about some of the most popular non-gambling activities. We have experienced and regretted all of these “must do” attractions, so you don’t have to.
Indoor Gondola Ride
If your idea of romance involves sharing a 10-13 minute float through a shopping center in a manmade pond with strangers, then go ahead and ignore our advice. (If your party has less than four people, other passengers will be seated with you — unless you pay $156 for a private ride for two.)
But it gets even worse…
Your gondolier will sing loudly and in Italian, regardless of your preferences. This will attract unwanted attention to your embarrassing situation, leading to at least one group of tourists filming you and sharing the clip on social media inside the Venetian.
Las Vegas Sign Photo
Not only is this idea far from original, but it can take up to half an hour to find parking (if all spaces near the sign are full). Additionally, it can cost you $10, as well as an extra hour waiting in line for the official Las Vegas Sign photographer to take your picture.
If you still want to go due to fear of missing out (FOMO), be aware that there is no official Las Vegas Sign photographer. It’s a ploy. Instead, find a friendly couple in line, ask them to capture your photo from an angle to the side of the sign, and offer to return the favor for them.
Fat Tuesday’s “Yard Drinks”
Consuming 100 frozen ounces of drinks like “Cat 5 Hurricane” or “190 Octane” in Las Vegas is a risky move. These oversized drinks, found at 16 Fat Tuesday locations on the Strip, can lead to dehydration, blood sugar spikes, and a guaranteed hangover the next day — along with a weight gain of 2-3 pounds.
Certain vending machines: available at most Caesars Entertainment properties, these Carlo’s Bake Shop vending machines, also known as “cake ATMs,” promise slices of Rainbow, Red Velvet, Chocolate Fudge, or Carrot Cake that are “made fresh and delivered daily.”
According to a TikTok influencer’s video review, the $10 slices are actually frozen from a warehouse in New Jersey, where they have been sitting for weeks. Additionally, the slices are soaked in corn syrup to maintain moisture.
Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum
Remember, these are simply wax figures. They will appear shiny and unrealistic in all the photos you take at Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum. If the entry fee was free, it might be somewhat worth it. However, this experience, situated outside the Venetian, costs $30-$40 per person.
Pawn Stars Shop
Approximately 5,000 tourists visit the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop daily, hoping to meet the stars of the History Channel’s “Pawn Stars” or sell their valuable items on the show. However, none of the show’s cast members actually work at the pawn shop anymore. Since the first season premiered in 2009, the cast has been shooting on a hidden set inside the same building, away from public access.
Seven Magic Mountains Photo
This art installation features colored boulders stacked on top of each other, meant to be seen from the I-15 freeway. Viewing the installation up close does not enhance the experience, and climbing on the rocks could result in fines from the Nevada Highway Patrol and payment for any damages caused.
The installation is also located a 15-minute drive from the closest freeway exit, delaying your arrival in Vegas by an additional half hour.
