A shocking incident has been uncovered in Las Vegas where a couple allegedly hoarded and mistreated animals. Authorities found a distressing scene involving deceased and living dogs in a Las Vegas hotel room, alongside other animals like rabbits and guinea pigs.
Reports revealed that nearly 100 animals were found in various locations connected to the couple, with 25 of them tragically being deceased according to sources like Las Vegas TV station KSNV.
Following this distressing discovery, Carolyn Luke, 72, and Timothy Miller, 79, were arrested and charged with 11 counts of animal abuse.
The initial charges relate to the abuse of guinea pigs, and additional charges may be issued for the mistreatment of dogs.
The suspects appeared in court in Boulder City and are set for another virtual appearance before a judge later in the week. Both individuals are currently held at the Henderson Detention Center as the investigation continues.
The incident came to light when Boulder City police stopped the couple’s vehicle near an intersection, leading to the shocking discovery of dead animals inside.
Discovery of Deceased Animals in Car
Authorities reported that upon approaching the vehicle, a strong odor of dead animals was detected by officers, leading to the search that uncovered a heartbreaking scene inside the car.
Around 51 guinea pigs and rabbits were found inside, with 11 of the guinea pigs being discovered dead in plastic totes and luggage. Sadly, four more guinea pigs succumbed to their conditions in the following days.
“Our officers knew right away that something was wrong,” said Boulder City Police Lt. Thomas Healing. “The female suspect expressed concern about other animals at their home and a hotel in Las Vegas, leading to immediate action by law enforcement.”
Boulder City Animal Control supervisor Ann Inabnitt highlighted the extensive veterinary care needed for the rescued animals, noting the financial strain and complexities of the situation.
“We’re also finding pregnant pets, adding to the challenges of managing the impounded animals,” Inabnitt said, expressing gratitude for the quick response in handling the case.
Animal Rights Activist Takes Action
Gina Greisen from Nevada Voters for Animals played a crucial role in uncovering the situation by alerting authorities and following the suspects to Boulder City.
Greisen emphasized the need for accountability and justice, pledging to pursue the truth until the animals are properly cared for and the perpetrators face legal consequences.
Officials from Henderson and Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department are actively investigating the case, though specific details have not been disclosed.
