Before the New Year’s Eve celebration, Las Vegas activated 22 new surveillance cameras at intersections of the Fremont Street Experience (FSE). These cameras scan for stolen or wanted vehicle license plates, alerting law enforcement of any matches found.
According to a city press release, “The cameras will enhance public safety during New Year’s Eve celebrations and beyond.”
The city claims that the cameras are not used by police to monitor or enforce traffic violations like speeding or running red lights.
Keep an Eye Out
Over 300 video cameras already monitor the crowd beneath the FSE’s large LED canopy, which attracts millions of visitors annually.
In 2020, the FSE installed a gunshot detection system called ShotPoint, integrating with existing cameras to provide real-time alerts to law enforcement.
Following gun violence incidents, FSE also implemented an AI-powered “smart safety platform” two years later. Created by Vegas tech company Remark Holdings, it utilizes cameras to identify potential safety risks such as fire, intruders, unattended bags, vandalism, graffiti, fights, and loitering.
This platform also assists with crowd counting and analyzing pedestrian traffic flow patterns.
