• Travelers in Las Vegas will soon enjoy the benefits of Waymo’s self-driving taxis in and around the Strip.
• Waymo, which has conducted tests in Vegas, is set to bring back its autonomous taxi service next summer.

Waymo has revealed its intentions to launch services in Las Vegas during the upcoming summer. The autonomous vehicle company also operates in key cities like LA, San Francisco, Phoenix, Atlanta, and Austin.

“Las Vegas is known for its entertainment and excitement, but road safety is not to be taken lightly,” the company remarked on Monday. “That’s why we’re excited to bring the safety and innovation of our autonomous ride-hailing services back to Las Vegas residents and visitors starting next summer.”

While autonomous vehicles boast a commendable safety record compared to human drivers, accidents can still occur, leading to intriguing scenarios.

Exploring with Waymo

Waymo, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc., has previously conducted test phases in Las Vegas but assures that its return will be permanent this time.

The service will primarily focus on the Strip, with plans to eventually expand to serve the airport as well.

Approval from Clark County officials, the City of Las Vegas, and the state DMV is required for Waymo to commence commercial operations, although this is expected to be routine.

Mayor Shelley Berkley endorsed Waymo’s initiative, stating: “The advent of Waymo and its autonomous technology represents a reliable, safe option for our residents and the millions of tourists visiting our city — providing transportation beyond just the Strip.”

Waymo’s fleet will include a combination of all-electric Jaguar I-PACE vehicles equipped with the 5th generation Waymo Driver, along with new Zeekr RT models featuring the advanced 6th generation Waymo Driver.

Meanwhile, Waymo’s primary competitor, Amazon’s Zoox, launched its robotaxis on the Las Vegas Strip just last month.

Additionally, Waymo announced on Monday that it is expanding its operations into San Diego and Detroit.
