MGM Resorts International announced that it experienced a data breach involving customer information prior to March 2019. The compromised data includes names, Social Security numbers, birth dates, and driver’s license/passport numbers.
However, CEO Bill Hornbuckle assured customers in a letter that there is no evidence of identity theft or account fraud. He also stated that sensitive information such as passwords, bank account numbers, and payment card details were not leaked.
Contrary to a claim circulating on social media, MGM Rewards Facebook group member Pat Ellis alleged that the hackers have begun draining BetMGM accounts and accessing tax documents. However, Casino.org found no evidence of this claim and was subsequently banned from the group when attempting to investigate further.
While there are widespread reports from social media users unable to access their BetMGM accounts, Casino.org only found five similar claims on other platforms. Unfortunately, none of the claimants responded to interview requests. This lack of evidence supports MGM’s denial of widespread theft.
Opportunistic Lawsuits
Regardless of the veracity of these claims, attorneys are capitalizing on the situation, filing multiple lawsuits against MGM and Caesars Entertainment. However, the lawsuits only allege negligence, breach of contract, and unjust enrichment, without specific fraud or theft claims.
According to sources cited by the Wall Street Journal, MGM expects a $100 million decline in third-quarter earnings due to the recent ransomware attack, which the company refused to pay. In contrast, Caesars Entertainment paid a reported $15 million following a similar attack before September 7.
