Two former officers from the London Metropolitan Police received suspended sentences on Monday after acknowledging their involvement in the sexual assault of a woman at the Hippodrome Casino.
Jerome Beasley, aged 43, and Luke Robinson, aged 40, were off duty when they repeatedly touched a woman’s breasts at The Rooftop Bar located in the vibrant West End of London. Both men were dismissed from the Metropolitan Police in January after facing charges for three counts of sexual assault each, a crime that was recorded by the casino’s surveillance system.
Flagrant Assault
Evidence presented in court revealed that both officers were intoxicated and devised a method to compare the size of their hands by cupping the woman’s breasts openly, despite her protests to stop, according to the prosecution.
“The two defendants subjected her to a prolonged sexual assault by continuously touching her breasts,” stated prosecutor Mark Gadsden. “The victim instinctively crossed her arms to shield herself.”
During the incident, the woman was also groped on her backside, and she shared in court how the officers’ actions made her feel “shocked and vulnerable,” adding that she has been enduring PTSD and anxiety attacks since the assault.
“They inappropriately touched me repeatedly without my consent,” she expressed in her victim impact statement. “You turned me into an object,” she directed at the defendants.
“You ignored my requests to stop. You continued to touch me over and over again. I find it difficult to enjoy outings, and this has harmed my relationships with everyone around me.”
The officers changed their pleas to guilty just days prior to their trial date. Beasley, who has two children, received a suspended 15-month prison term, while Robinson, also a father of two, was sentenced to 13 months, suspended for two years as well.
‘Inappropriate Conduct’
The court required both men to complete 250 hours of community service and 30 hours of rehabilitation activities. They were also subjected to a five-month overnight curfew, five-year restraining orders, and directed to pay £750 in compensation each to the victim.
“This was unacceptable behavior by police officers who should serve as role models instead of humiliating themselves in this way,” the judge explained during the sentencing. “Your actions were inherently offensive to all reasonable individuals.
“There is a justified public outcry at current times regarding officers’ behavior in the Metropolitan Police. The community justly expects far better,” he concluded.
