After U2’s successful opening of the Sphere at the Venetian, the reviews have been positive, with many agreeing that the venue has enhanced the skyline and has the potential to boost the local economy. As a sports betting writer, it’s worth keeping an eye on this exciting development.
However, there have been concerns raised about the potential impact of the Sphere on a residential college town in London. An organization called Stop The MSG Sphere London has gathered nearly 3,000 signatures on a Change.org petition opposing the construction of the orb-shaped concert venue. They argue that it could disrupt transportation in the area and block sunlight to residential blocks.
The proposed location for the second Sphere is in Stratford, a town with a strong presence of the University of East London, Olympic Park, apartments, a shopping mall, restaurants, bars, and arts venues.
The London Sphere is budgeted at approximately $975 million and would be around 300 feet high and 400 feet wide, making it smaller than the Vegas version. However, it would still be an impressive structure and hold up to 18,000 people.
According to spokesperson Lindesay Mace from Stop the MSG Sphere London, the design of the Sphere is more suited for Vegas rather than a small site surrounded by residential properties. Competitors, including AEG, have also expressed their disapproval due to the proximity of the London Sphere to the O2 Arena in southeast London.
Sphere Entertainment Co.’s executive chairman and CEO James Dolan has expressed his plans to expand the concept globally, with the belief that the Sphere will revolutionize the entertainment industry. While there is some local support for the second Sphere, including a poll indicating 85% approval, the project still faces hurdles such as reaching an agreement for a review of the building’s advertising display and obtaining approval from London’s mayor, Sadik Khan.
