On Monday, the Macau Grand Prix Organizing Committee disclosed the specifics for the event scheduled for Nov. 13-16. Each casino—Sands, Galaxy, Wynn, MGM, SJM, and Melco—has committed MOP20 million (approximately US$2.5 million) for this prestigious competition.

The overall cost of the event is projected to be $30 million, with casinos contributing half of that amount.

This annual gathering is a collaboration between the International Automobile Federation (FIA) and the Macau Special Administrative Region (SAR) Government.

Race Essential for Diversification

Macau, together with its casino partners, is making strides to shift from a gaming-centric approach. The Macau Grand Prix has traditionally attracted non-gaming tourists to the world’s most lucrative gaming destination.

Last year’s event saw over 100,000 attendees, which resulted in nearly all major casino hotels reaching full capacity at increased nightly rates. Guests tend to spend significantly on dining, transportation, and shopping, while many also engage in casual gambling.

Events like the Macau Grand Prix draw a significant influx of international tourists, enriching the tourism economy and fostering the growth of allied industries including hospitality, transport, dining, and retail,” stated Luís Gomes, president of the Macau Sports Bureau and coordinator of the Macau Grand Prix Organizing Committee. “The Macau Grand Prix stands as the most historic sporting event in Macao, and is among the most eagerly awaited motorsport occasions globally.”

Distinct from the Las Vegas Grand Prix, which is an F1 event, the Macau Grand Prix features a diverse range of competitions, including motorcycle, touring, grand touring, and sports car races.

Emerging Sports Hub

The Macau SAR Government aims to enhance its stature in the Asian sports realm, akin to Las Vegas, which has rapidly established itself in the US sports scene, hosting the 2024 Super Bowl and becoming home to the NFL Raiders. Macau views sports as a vital element in achieving its diversification objectives.

Recently, the NBA made a comeback to China after a six-year hiatus through Macau, featuring two preseason exhibition matches between the Brooklyn Nets and the Phoenix Suns. Both matches at The Venetian Arena on the Cotai Strip were sold out.

The Venetian is one of Sands China’s five integrated resort casinos in Macau. The company is overseen by Dr. Miriam Adelson, the principal shareholder of the Sands dynasty. Besides her casino operations, inherited from her late husband, Sheldon Adelson, in early 2021, Adelson also holds the majority stake in the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks.

Patrick Dumont, Adelson’s son-in-law and co-owner of the Mavericks, has expressed intentions to host regular-season NBA games in Macau.

“The Mavericks and the [Houston] Rockets will be here in Macau next year. Are you ready?” Dumont hinted during a conversation about the preseason matches at The Venetian.

The Rockets enjoy immense popularity in China, primarily due to the legendary Yao Ming, a native of Shanghai, who played his entire nine-year NBA career in Houston.
