Malaysia’s largest political party has declared its intention to close down the only casino in the country if it comes to power in Pahang state, where Resorts World Genting is located.
The Malaysian Islamic Party (Parti Islam SeMalaysia – PAS) currently governs four of Malaysia’s states and holds the most seats in the federal parliament after the 2022 elections.
PAS’s main objective is to implement Shariah law and replace Malaysia’s democratic system with it.
Andansura Rabu, PAS’ deputy commissioner for Pahang, recently stated, “Anything that can harm society, we must together support its destruction.” This isn’t a matter of religion, it’s a social issue.
“Gambling is harmful, so we have to close it,” he added. “But it must be in accordance with the laws and Constitution.
Complex System
Malaysia has a diverse population and political system with 13 states and three federal territories.
PAS garners support from conservative northeastern and northwestern rural areas of Peninsula Malaysia, which contains 11 states including the capital, Kuala Lumpur.
Pahang, the center of Peninsula Malaysia, has a large Muslim majority but allows residents to practice other religions. Muslim residents are subject to Shariah law in certain areas.
Genting Highlands, a popular resort location near Kuala Lumpur, is located in Pahang. Despite PAS potentially winning Pahang in the upcoming election, the authority to close Resorts World Genting rests with the federal government.
Green Wave
Shares of Genting plummeted after the 2022 elections when PAS gained momentum but rebounded due to the lack of support from mainstream parties to form a coalition government.
The current coalition government, led by Prime Minister Anwar bin Ibrahim’s People’s Justice Party, oversees Resorts World Genting, a significant contributor to Malaysia’s economy.
