According to Las Vegas TV station KTNV, Cesar Reyes II, 26, from Indio, Calif., was charged with suspicion of possession of child pornography just two days before the shooting on December 8. His arrest led to him being placed on administrative leave from his position as a probation officer in Riverside County, California.

Reyes was detained at the John Benoit Detention Center, but he posted a $30,000 bond before heading to Las Vegas.

While at the South Point Hotel Casino & Spa in Las Vegas, Reyes’ family informed hotel security after finding a suicide note at his residence in California.

Security guards heard what seemed like the sound of a gun being prepared when they tried to enter his hotel room, prompting them to step back.

Local law enforcement was called in, but Reyes refused to open the door. The SWAT team and negotiators were summoned, but their efforts to persuade him to surrender were unsuccessful. Eventually, explosives were used to open the door of the hotel room. At that moment, Reyes charged at LVMPD officers in the hallway.

Reyes did not comply with commands to drop his shotgun, leading LVMPD Officer Zachary Adam to fatally shoot him.

It was later discovered that the shotgun Reyes was holding was unloaded. He also had a handgun in his possession, according to police reports.

In accordance with standard LVMPD protocol for shootings involving officers, there will be an investigation to determine the justification for the use of deadly force.

No guests or officers were harmed during the incident, as reported by KTNV.
