The Massachusetts Gaming Commission has introduced PlayWell, an innovative responsible gaming and player health initiative that replaces GameSense.
The commission indicated that this launch represents a crucial milestone in its ongoing commitment to bolster player welfare and promote responsible gambling across Massachusetts. The PlayWell branding will be prominently featured at casinos and sports betting platforms statewide.
Engineered for broad accessibility, PlayWell aims to provide resources to players in-person, online, and via phone, ensuring they remain informed and capable of managing their gambling behavior effectively.
Massachusetts regulations mandate that the MGC upholds a responsible gaming program that is available at all licensed casinos. PlayWell is entirely owned by the commission, with its administration overseen by the Massachusetts Council on Gaming and Health.
“Upon the legalization of gaming in the Commonwealth, it was imperative to establish a top-tier research, responsible gaming, and player health program to safeguard the longevity of the industry,” commented MGC Chair Jordan Maynard.
“For over a decade, the commission has collaborated with stakeholders, elected officials, operators, and gamers to compile extensive knowledge on gambling-related issues and player well-being. The inauguration of this new initiative, managed and operated by the MGC, will enable the Commission to deliver more effective support to Massachusetts residents in need,” he added.
PlayWell also includes designated “PlayWell Hubs” at each casino in the state, serving as locations where individuals can step back from gaming, gather information about games, or consult with trained advisors for support services.
“PlayWell is crafted specifically for the needs of Massachusetts gamblers,” said Mark Vander Linden, MGC Director of Research and Responsible Gaming. “Supported by research and evaluation, PlayWell advisors provide timely and pertinent advice, information, and resources to patrons both in casinos and online.”
Additionally, PlayWell offers tools such as beginner-friendly guides to casino games and options for voluntary self-exclusion programs.
The PlayWell Hubs officially opened at all Massachusetts casino venues on March 27. A flagship feature of the program is PlayMyWay, touted as a “first-in-the-nation” tool for players to set daily gambling limits.
MGM Springfield was one of the casinos to launch the initiative. Participants can enroll in a voluntary exclusion list, barring them from gambling at MGM Springfield or any other Massachusetts casino.
Support options extend beyond machines. Staff members are present at the Hub, ready to provide individualized counsel to visitors.
“A recent study suggested that these centers should cater to everyone, not only those potentially facing gambling-related problems,” stated Daniel Miller, compliance director at MGM Springfield. “I believe this revamped center encourages everyone to utilize the resources available.”
