
In April, Massachusetts showcased a remarkable 34.2% year-on-year surge in taxable sports betting revenue, totaling $65.9 million, as per the latest figures from the Massachusetts Gaming Commission. This marks a robust 25.8% increase compared to March, notwithstanding a slight dip in overall betting handle month-to-month.
The total sports betting handle for April reached $690.3 million, reflecting a 14.4% rise from the previous year but showing a 4.5% decline from March. Online wagering continued to lead the charge, amassing $65.5 million in revenue from a $680.5 million handle, while retail betting generated $486,828 from $9.7 million in bets.
The statewide hold, which indicates the percentage of total bets retained as revenue, was recorded at 9.55%.
Among online operators, DraftKings upheld its dominant stature, achieving $37.8 million in revenue from $343 million in bets, resulting in an 11.02% hold. FanDuel trailed with $17.9 million in revenue from a $185.9 million handle, yielding a 9.63% hold, while BetMGM secured the third position with $3.9 million from $55.1 million in wagers (7.08% hold).
Fanatics made a notable appearance, reporting $3.1 million in revenue from a $49.3 million handle (6.3% hold), alongside ESPN Bet, which saw $1.8 million in revenue from a $21.7 million handle (4.61% hold).
In retail betting, Encore Boston Harbor led the way with $372,527 from $5 million in bets (7.52% hold). Meanwhile, Plainridge Casino Park secured $114,301 from $3.1 million (3.65% hold), and MGM Springfield reported no revenue from $1.6 million in wagers.
Expanding the scope, Massachusetts’ land-based gaming venues reported a collective revenue of $102.1 million for April, marking a 4.7% increase year-on-year but a 2.9% decrease from March. Slot machines contributed $71.1 million, and table games accounted for $31 million.
Encore Boston Harbor again led the sector, generating $63.5 million in revenue, followed by MGM Springfield with $23.5 million, and Plainridge Park Casino with $15.1 million.
In total, Massachusetts collected $42.3 million in tax revenue from legal commercial gambling activities, comprised of $13.2 million from sports betting and $26.2 million from casino gaming.
