The Miami Heat are parting ways with Terry Rozier, who is currently under federal investigation for alleged gambling violations and is away from the team, as reported by ESPN and the Miami Herald. The franchise plans to release the guard prior to the commencement of the NBA playoffs.

October Arrest Details

Rozier has entered a not-guilty plea to federal conspiracy charges related to wire fraud and money laundering. Currently, there is no court date scheduled for the trial.

As per Spotrac, Rozier’s salary for this season stands at $26.6 million, marking the final year of a four-year deal he signed with the Charlotte Hornets in 2022. While on leave due to the FBI investigation, Rozier is not receiving any payments.

By releasing Rozier, the Heat could open a roster position as they prepare for the playoffs. The NBA Players’ Association has contested the decision to withhold his salary.

An additional concern includes the potential compensation for the Heat, as some allege that the team should have been informed about the investigation into Rozier at the time of his trade from the Hornets to Miami in 2024. Earlier in March, the Hornets disclosed they would send a 2026 second-round draft pick to the Heat to address the ongoing conflict between the two franchises.

In December, the NBA commissioner indicated that this situation was unique, suggesting that some form of relief would have to be ordered in favor of Miami. The Heat still owes a first-round draft pick to Charlotte in either 2027 or 2028 as part of the original transaction.

Trial Date Still Pending

Rozier’s arrest occurred in October due to his suspected involvement in an illegal gambling operation. For the Heat, Rozier would need to be waived by 5 p.m. EST on April 9 to go through the waivers process before the NBA regular season concludes on April 12.

Rozier’s legal team, consisting of James Trusty and A. Jeff Ifrah, contended in a motion to dismiss in December that government actions represented an overreach, transforming a private matter concerning bettors’ misuse of confidential information into a federal issue.

Allegations claim that Rozier collaborated with bettors while playing for the Hornets by intentionally sitting out of an NBA game in March 2023 due to a foot injury, less than ten minutes into the game. Authorities allege he exited the game to enable him and the bettors to profit from $200,000 worth of prop betting linked to Rozier’s performance in that match.
