MGM National Harbor has decided to discontinue its complimentary parking policy in light of two tragic shootings that occurred in its parking garage over the last two years.

On June 25, last Thursday, a fatal incident occurred in which 33-year-old Christopher Austin Jr. from Alexandria, VA, was shot during a road rage altercation, with 36-year-old Tyrell Hairston from Accokeek, MD, as the suspect. Hairston turned himself in about 20 minutes post-incident, claiming self-defense.
This incident tragically follows another shooting that happened just over two years prior, where a 37-year-old man from Washington was killed inside the MGM parking garage at approximately 4:50 AM in May 2024. The shooter, Dayon Neal, evaded capture for two years until he was finally arrested by U.S. Marshals last month.
Since its grand opening in December 2016, MGM National Harbor has offered free self-parking. However, in light of recent events, the casino is taking precautionary measures to deter criminal activity.
MGM Parking Fees
Starting Monday, July 13, MGM National Harbor will introduce a daily parking fee of $15. Nonetheless, guests possessing an MGM Rewards loyalty card will continue to enjoy complimentary self-parking. Valet parking will remain free for Gold, Platinum, and NOIR tier members of MGM Rewards.
The parking garage at MGM National Harbor accommodates 5,000 vehicles.
“As of July 13, 2026, MGM National Harbor will implement self-parking fees for individuals not enrolled in MGM Rewards while still providing free self-parking to all MGM Rewards members. Joining MGM Rewards is complimentary and includes perks like free parking, exclusive discounts, special offers, entertainment benefits, and more,” the casino stated in an official announcement.
Local residents have expressed their dissatisfaction with the parking fee initiative. On the social media outlet PGCNTY, numerous comments reflected frustration over the new charges.
“They don’t offer free drinks anymore. Now they want us to pay for parking too? That’s outrageous. Any obstacle preventing people from gambling will undoubtedly impact revenue,” commented one user. Another added, “This is just too much.”
Conversely, some community members believe the changes are necessary for enhanced safety.
“Just register for MGM Rewards. If you’re already going to spend there, you might as well accumulate points. They need to keep track of who is entering and exiting,” stated another commenter.
Bail Denied
Judge Clayton Aarons of the Maryland District Court has denied bond for Hairston, dismissing the claims of self-defense made by his attorney.
“My client was at MGM and genuinely believed that the alleged victim was armed, fearing for his life, which led to his actions,” defended attorney Hassan Ahmad.
Prosecutors presented video evidence of the encounter, leading Judge Aarons to deny bail.
Hairston faces multiple felony charges, including first and second-degree murder.
