Michigan’s online gambling sector achieved a historic milestone with revenues hitting $301.4 million in May, leading state and local authorities to collect over $90 million from taxes and regulatory fees derived from online gaming and casino activities.
This unprecedented $301.4 million in gross revenue, sourced from online casino games and sports betting, exceeded the former record of $260.5 million set in March by 15.8%, as reported by the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB).
When compared to May 2024, overall gross revenue increased by 26%, while the rise from April 2025 was noted at 21.6%. Adjusted gross revenue—after deducting promotional expenses—amounted to $271.8 million, reflecting a year-on-year growth of 31.4% and a month-to-month increase of 4.6%.
Majority of Revenue from iGaming
Online casino gaming maintained its dominance in the digital betting landscape, generating $251.5 million in gross revenue for May, which is a 26.6% rise compared to the same month last year. Adjusted iGaming revenue reached $236.2 million, indicating a 31.9% year-over-year boost.
BetMGM and MGM Grand Detroit led the group of iGaming operators with $7.4 million in gross receipts and $63.3 million in adjusted revenue, reclaiming the top spot after being in second place in April.
FanDuel and MotorCity Casino closely followed, reporting $65.9 million in gross and $61.9 million in adjusted revenue. Meanwhile, DraftKings partnered with the Bay Mills Indian Community to generate $36.3 million in gross and $34.1 million in adjusted earnings.
Commercial iGaming entities contributed $49.1 million towards state taxes. Detroit received $12.7 million from this sector, and tribal operators added $5.8 million to their respective governments.
Improvements in Sports Betting Revenue
Mobile sports betting platforms disclosed gross receipts of $50 million in May, marking a 19.3% increase compared to the previous year. Adjusted sports betting revenue reached $35.6 million, showcasing a year-on-year growth of 27.7%. The total wagering handle amounted to $386.1 million, which is 12.3% higher than May 2024.
FanDuel and MotorCity Casino announced $22.6 million in gross receipts from a $139.5 million handle, achieving a hold rate of 16.2%. DraftKings and Bay Mills reported $12.5 million from $108.2 million in bets, while BetMGM and MGM Grand Detroit recorded $7.4 million from a $54.7 million handle. The overall statewide hold rate was 12.95%.
The state amassed $2 million in sports betting taxes, while Detroit received $651,441.
Contributions by Detroit Casinos
Regarding terrestrial casino gaming, Detroit’s trio of commercial casinos—MGM Grand Detroit, MotorCity, and Hollywood Casino at Greektown—reported a total of $114 million in revenue for May, reflecting a marginal increase of 0.4% from May 2024. Revenue from slots and table games totaled $112.7 million, and retail sports betting added $1.3 million.
The casinos contributed $9.1 million in state gaming taxes along with $13.4 million to the city of Detroit. Retail sports betting provided $48,431 in state taxes and added $59,193 to the city’s coffers.
