Michigan ranks as the fourth richest state in commercial gaming after Nevada, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. The state’s gaming expansion is mainly due to its legal iGaming market, which continues to grow in popularity among gamers.

Henry Williams, the Executive Director of the MGCB, expressed pride in the impact the board has had on Michigan. He highlighted the support provided to education, first responders, and efforts in curbing illegal gambling.

However, concerns have been raised by mental health and addiction counselors about the negative effects of online gambling, including increased rates of problem gambling, bankruptcies, broken families, and substance abuse.

Alia Lucas, a gambling disorder specialist with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, noted the challenges posed by online gambling and the increased workload on the state’s health agency.

Michigan has various tax rates for different forms of gaming, including in-person casinos, sports betting, and online gaming, with the revenue contributing to state programs such as education and responsible gaming initiatives.
