The New York Knicks anticipate that center Mitchell Robinson will sit out the rest of the season while he recovers from an ankle injury. They applied for a disabled player exception (DPE) worth $7.8 million.

Teams can apply with the NBA league office for a DPE if they think a player will be sidelined for an entire season. In the case of Robinson, he underwent surgery to repair a left ankle injury. At first, the Knicks hoped for a return sometime in March, but their DPE application suggests that Robinson will be out through June 15.

Initial estimates suggested that Robinson would return in eight to ten weeks, so the loss of Robinson is a significant blow to the Knicks. He plays a crucial role in their line-up, anchoring the team with excellent defense and rebounding skills.

Without Robinson, the Knicks have been linked in possible trade deals with different teams involving big men, including Karl-Anthony Towns from the Timberwolves and reigning MVP Joel Embiid from the 76ers, while the Knicks have also been mentioned as a possible trade partner with the Chicago Bulls. Keep an eye out for any potential trades in the coming weeks.

Backup Isiah Hartenstein Shines with Robinson Out

Third-string center Jericho Sims replaced Robinson in the starting lineup at center to maintain continuity and allow backup center Isiah Hartenstein to emerge. Since replacing Robinson, Hartenstein has seen an increase in playing time and production, earning himself a place in the Knicks’ vaunted second unit. And the Knicks have proven they can hold their own without Robinson, winning three of their first four games without him.

The Knicks recently returned from a challenging four-game road trip, going 2-2 against Western Conference opponents. They’re currently in the midst of a tough 10-game stretch, playing only winning teams above .500. So far, the Knicks have held their own without Robinson in the line-up.

Check out the Knicks’ upcoming schedule, including games against the Milwaukee Bucks and other top Eastern Conference teams. With their willingness to face tough competition and ability to step up in Robinson’s absence, the Knicks have proven that they’re a team to keep an eye on in the Eastern Conference.
