S&K Gaming is set to unveil the 400 Horses Casino in Polson, Montana, next month, with a grand ceremony planned for May 5 at 2 p.m., signifying a significant growth in its gaming portfolio.

The expansive 34,000-square-foot venue, positioned on Irvine Flats Road, will showcase over 300 gaming machines, with intentions to expand by adding another 100 machines in the future, complemented by a restaurant. The initiative has already generated more than 75 employment opportunities.

The casino project has been in the works since 2021, with final approvals obtained in late 2024, and construction was initiated on April 9, 2025. This establishment is developed in accordance with the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes’ operational structure, with 60% of casino earnings directed back into tribal communities for various social services.

Located on a 79-acre tribal tract, approximately 10 acres are designated for the casino project, which was annexed into the city of Polson in 2023, allowing the facility access to municipal water and sewer systems.

Zeke Keeler, the marketing director at S&K Gaming, noted that by connecting to the city’s water and sewer, the project eliminated the necessity to drill a well or set up a drain field, thereby enhancing water access for future developments.

This new casino aims to rectify layout inefficiencies observed at S&K’s Kwataqnuk Resort & Casino, where gaming spaces were incorporated post the hotel’s initial construction, leading to an arrangement that Chief Executive Officer Bryon Miller referred to as “peculiar”.

Insights gained from Gray Wolf Peak Casino have influenced the design here, emphasizing a more functional use of space.

Gaming amenities will feature Class II slot machines and electronic table games, with no live table games available during the initial launch.

The facility will also include the 371 Bar and Grill, a dining venue with a capacity of around 70 guests, offering both indoor and outdoor seating with views of Flathead Lake. Chef Pedro Vera, previously the executive chef at Finley Point Grill, will oversee restaurant operations extending their hours alongside the casino.

Miller indicated that they are collaborating closely with the Montana Department of Transportation on traffic management strategies, which include road adjustments and adding turning lanes near the site, although some enhancements may not be finalized before the opening.

Miller characterized the process as cooperative, involving various stakeholders. The name “400 Horses” was chosen through community feedback and pays tribute to Chief Alexander, who played a crucial role in the establishment of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes. Chief Alexander was nicknamed “No Horses” and was said to have amassed significant wealth at the end of his life, owning around 400 horses.

Following the launch of the casino, renovations are anticipated at the Kwataqnuk Resort, focusing on making the venue more suitable for families.
