If you gain the admiration of Dominique Wilkins, it’s clear you’re on the right track. The Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer is widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time and a pivotal figure in the Atlanta Hawks’ history. Known for his iconic battles against Michael Jordan in the Slam Dunk Contest, Wilkins was also a top-tier player and scorer of his era.
At 66 years old, Wilkins has participated in nine consecutive All-Star games and earned seven All-NBA selections. Notably, he topped the NBA in scoring with an impressive average of 30.3 points per game during the 1985-86 season.
Looking to the present, the Hawks are now spearheaded by emerging star Jalen Johnson. The 24-year-old made his All-Star debut this year, shining in his breakout season. As a former first-round pick, he’s currently averaging 23.4 points, 10.8 rebounds, and 8.1 assists per game, placing the Hawks in contention for the playoffs.
Wilkins, who faced off against Chicago Bulls legend Scottie Pippen in their prime, sees similarities in Johnson’s game.
“I would say he’s reminiscent of Scottie Pippen, particularly as a point forward,” Wilkins shared in an exclusive interview with Casino.org. “Pippen excelled in that role, and Jalen adds another layer with his rebounding, passing, and propensity to flirt with triple-doubles nightly.
“I’m a huge fan of Jalen Johnson. His playing style is fantastic, and he truly deserves the accolades he received during All-Star weekend. I couldn’t be prouder for him.”
Wilkins mentioned enjoying a “great” rapport with Johnson, noting that he is acquainted with Johnson’s parents.
“I see Jalen as somewhat of a little brother,” Wilkins stated. “My relationship with him and his family is strong. I recognized his growth two years ago and assured his parents, ‘Trust me, he’s destined for success in this league. Just be patient.’ And look where he is now.”
Wilkins: Johnson’s Future as a Scorer and Defensive Player
Two years ago, Johnson averaged 16.0 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game. Now, all his averages have surged, particularly in assists.
Wilkins advises Johnson to focus on the present and avoid worrying too far ahead.
“Jalen has progressed faster than many anticipated,” Wilkins noted. “The mantra is to concentrate on the task at hand. Don’t fixate on the distant future. Focus on your current game, and take it one match, one month, and one year at a time.”
When asked about areas for improvement, Wilkins acknowledged that while he didn’t pinpoint a specific aspect, he emphasized the importance of continuous development in scoring and defense as Johnson matures as a player.
“At just 24, there are numerous areas where he can still grow,” Wilkins said. “Defensively, he’ll improve, and he’ll find more scoring methods. The beauty of being young is the opportunity to refine your game and evolve into a more deadly player.”
Wilkins: Hawks Positioned for a Strong Eastern Conference Stand
The Hawks currently sit ninth in the Eastern Conference, aiming for their first playoff spot since the 2022-23 season.
Wilkins expresses confidence that this team can make meaningful strides in the postseason following impactful trades made during the season.
“At this juncture of the season, it’s all about fostering chemistry,” Wilkins explained. “Once that chemistry solidifies — hopefully soon — we still have a chance to make a significant impact, as there are still 30 games left to play. We’re right in the mix, and the Eastern Conference is tight. We boast a talented young squad: Jalen Johnson, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, and Dyson Daniels.
“With the addition of Jonathan Kuminga, along with Onyeka Okongwu, who is developing nicely, and promising newcomer Zaccharie Risacher, we have a group of young talents evolving together. This is the ideal approach.
“I expect us to elevate our game and strive for victories in the latter half of the season, especially as we return from the All-Star break, refocusing our efforts on winning.”
The Atlanta Hawks legend emphasized that the team has something “extraordinary” and believes they can become a consistent playoff contender, reminiscent of the franchise’s glory days during Wilkins’ career.
“We possess something significant, and we have the potential to be that young team that stands out in the Eastern Conference,” Wilkins stated. “I’m optimistic about making an impact now, rather than delaying until next year. We’re close. In this league, a team can get hot in just a month.
“Consider the Charlotte Hornets; they won 10 out of their last 12 before the All-Star break, gaining momentum as they entered the second half of the season. A quick run could change everything.”
Wilkins Reflects on Trae Young’s Time in Atlanta
With Johnson now taking the helm of the franchise, the Hawks embark on a new chapter. The previous leader, Trae Young, was traded to the Washington Wizards.
The four-time All-Star had a remarkable stint with the Hawks, leading the team to the Eastern Conference Finals while also leading the league in assists during the 2024-25 season. However, the franchise has struggled recently, failing to secure a playoff berth over the past two years.
Young has played just 10 games this season due to a sprained MCL and has not yet suited up for the Wizards. Commenting on the trade, Wilkins acknowledged that sometimes “things simply don’t line up.”
“In life, situations don’t always pan out, and timing can be everything,” Wilkins reflected. “We’ve all faced similar situations. I have too, and it’s part of the business. Trae was an exceptional player in the Hawks’ jersey, and no one can take away what he accomplished. His impact was truly remarkable.”
