Terry Rozier, a guard for the Miami Heat, alongside Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups, was detained this morning as part of separate FBI investigations concerning illicit gambling activities, according to various media outlets.
Billups Arrested in Connection with Illegal Poker Operation
FBI director Kash Patel is scheduled to conduct a press conference later today in New York to disclose further details regarding the allegations.
Rozier was apprehended at an Orlando hotel, where law enforcement informed ABC News that he was involved with a group implicated in managing an unlawful gambling enterprise utilizing confidential information to place illegal bets on NBA games.
Reportedly, Billups was taken into custody in Oregon, allegedly involved in an underground poker ring associated with organized crime.
Rozier Approaching the End of His Contract
Although Rozier was present for the Miami Heat’s game against the Orlando Magic last night, he did not play due to a hamstring injury. Currently in his 11th NBA season, Rozier significantly contributed to the Boston Celtics’ playoff journeys between 2016 and 2019.
The guard secured a four-year contract worth USD $96.3 million with the Charlotte Hornets in 2021 and subsequently joined the Heat in January 2024. He is slated to receive a base salary of USD $26.6 million this season, marking the final year of his contract.
Increase in Betting Activity During 2023 Hornets Game
While Rozier was still a Hornet, prior to a game against the New Orleans Pelicans on March 23, 2023, ESPN reported that multiple sportsbooks noted unusual betting trends surrounding Rozier’s performance statistics. Specifically, a noteworthy influx of bets—30 in just 46 minutes—from a professional gambler amounting to $13,759 targeted the Under for Rozier’s combined points, rebounds, and assists, prompting sportsbooks to temporarily halt betting on him. Rozier played only ten minutes in that match before exiting due to foot discomfort.
Rozier’s attorney has stated previously that his client met with officials from the NBA and FBI, and the NBA concluded that no rules were breached following their investigation into these events.
Upcoming FBI Press Conference Today
This latest round of arrests follows the NBA’s lifetime ban of former Toronto Raptor Jontay Porter, who pleaded guilty in July 2024 to conspiracy charges relating to game betting and disclosing personal injury information to sway prop bets.
After pleading guilty, Porter attempted to continue his professional basketball career in Greece, but a federal judge denied his request.
