- New dedicated platform enabling users to self-exclude from all regulated sites
- BetGuard launches today
- Currently, Ontario hosts 44 licensed operators and 76 gaming websites
BetGuard, the new centralized self-exclusion tool from iGaming Ontario (iGO), is now available for players in Ontario’s regulated online gaming market.

Centralized Access for Players
BetGuard is an exclusive site where individuals aged 19 and older can opt out in just minutes without needing to visit any gaming platforms. Every regulated igaming website, including Proline from the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation, is adjusted to acknowledge centralized self-exclusions. Upon signing up with valid identification on the portal, users will be blocked from accessing all regulated igaming sites in Ontario.
Residents of Ontario can willingly choose to self-exclude from online gambling for six months, one year, five years, or select a custom duration. The province boasts one of the largest regulated igaming markets in North America, featuring 44 licensed operators, 76 gaming websites, and generating over $4 billion in revenue in 2025.
Commitment to Responsible Gaming
“As the regulated market expands, so does the responsibility towards protecting our more vulnerable populations, particularly those who may struggle to find a healthy balance with responsible gaming,” stated Joseph Hillier, President and CEO of iGaming Ontario.
Ontario is now among a select few jurisdictions offering advanced, centralized self-exclusion that meets the demands of today’s digital landscape. BetGuard was designed with one clear goal: to provide those needing a break from all regulated igaming options the ability to do so easily.”
Users can extend or renew their exclusion period on the registry, but cancellation or shortening options are not available. The platform is designed to be user-friendly, secure, and efficient. Ultimately, it’s a choice made by the users themselves, Hillier added.
Encouraging Market Growth with Responsibility
Striking a balance between promoting growth in Ontario’s igaming market and ensuring responsible gambling practices has been a core focus since Hillier took on the role of President and CEO at iGaming Ontario in late 2025.
“This is a priority in our mission,” he remarked. “We have to uphold a dual mandate as the regulatory body for igaming in the province.”
“The market’s success reflects a careful blend of effective regulation, an appropriate revenue sharing model, and allowing operators the space to innovate and compete. Equally crucial is ensuring our players can access all tools necessary for making informed choices for safer play. BetGuard is just the first step in this initiative.”
A Sustainable Gaming Environment
Hillier pointed out that iGaming Ontario is actively exploring additional opportunities, drawing insights from other jurisdictions with successful responsible gaming tools and support systems to implement in Ontario. Promoting BetGuard to vulnerable communities, alongside awareness of the regulated market’s benefits, will be key responsibilities moving forward for iGO.
“This has been a thriving marketplace, driven by conditions that foster a robust, competitive environment and a commitment to responsible gaming,” said Paul Burns, President and CEO of the Canadian Gaming Association.
“We continue to urge operators to integrate responsible gaming practices into their core operations. Ontario’s operators have shown this commitment, driven by the structure and responsibility that iGO enforces.”
Raising Awareness and Education
“Furthermore, we’ve observed operators taking initiatives beyond compliance. Each operator aims to maintain a positive relationship with their players, which remains a priority. The dialogue regarding youth gambling is evolving as well, encouraging parents to ensure that minors do not create accounts.”
A broader educational aspect is crucial, emphasizing the responsibility of industry stakeholders to ensure the public comprehensively understands the nature of gambling products and how to engage with them effectively, added Burns.
