The Upper Peninsula of Michigan is renowned as a summer golfing haven, boasting numerous esteemed courses at tribal casino resorts.
Island Resort & Casino in Harris is already celebrated for its two exceptional 18-hole championship golf courses. Owned by the Hannahville Indian Community, it features the award-winning Sweetgrass Golf Club and Sage Run Golf Club.
Sweetgrass is ranked No. 9 in Golfweek’s list of Michigan’s public golf courses, while Sage Run holds the No. 13 spot.
The upcoming Cedar Course, a nine-hole design by Paul Albanese, is set to enhance the resort’s golfing experience. This par-36 layout stretches 3,445 yards and will accept its first tee times in July.
The Allure of Nine Holes
Tony Mancilla, the general manager of Island Resort & Casino, states that the Cedar Course is inspired by the timeless elegance of classic golf course architecture. Its standout hole is expected to be the 9th, featuring a prominent bunker reminiscent of the famous church pews at Oakmont.
Architect Albanese, who also designed the Sweetgrass and Sage Run Golf Courses, believes Cedar may be his best design for the casino.
“This might be my favorite site among the three courses we’ve crafted here,” Albanese noted. “It really offers a great setup for enjoyable golf. Cedar allows players to experience the strategy, creativity, and enjoyment typical of the Golden Age, all while feeling natural and unforced.”
Nine-hole rounds are increasingly popular among golfers. Given that resort golf can often be slow, this shorter option appeals to those with business or family obligations later in the day.
The Cedar Course will also cater to morning players, making it convenient for those departing in the afternoon.
“Summer is our busiest time, and our other two courses are usually fully booked during the mornings,” Mancilla explained. “We decided to introduce nine holes to accommodate guests seeking early tee times before heading home.”
“We’re not just expanding Sage Run; these nine holes will stand as their own unique course,” Mancilla clarified.
A Unique 3-3-3 Design
The Cedar Course stands out with its balanced design, featuring three par 3s, three par 4s, and three par 5s. The layout pays homage to some of the world’s most iconic holes, with the par-3 third hole reminiscent of renowned short holes like No. 8 at Troon and No. 7 at Pebble Beach.
The 8th hole at Cedar is a short par 4 that captures the risk-reward excitement of the drivable 10th hole at Riviera, long regarded as one of the premier short par 4s worldwide.
In addition to 45 holes of championship golf, Island Resort & Casino boasts 450 hotel rooms, an RV park, a spa, a saltwater pool, and seven dining options. The casino features 1,150 slot machines, a variety of table games, a bingo room, and a sportsbook.
