- Delaware North aims to relocate its New Hampshire charitable casino
- The Sheraton Nashua, known for its castle-like architecture, is the proposed new site
A unique castle-themed hotel in New Hampshire is under consideration for a new casino project in Nashua.

New Hampshire’s gaming landscape is evolving as state legislators approved the inclusion of video lottery terminals (VLTs) in charitable casinos last year. These VLTs provide quicker play, operating approximately five seconds faster than the previously utilized historical horse racing (HHR) machines within the state’s 14 charitable locations.
Since late 2022, Delaware North has managed the Gate City Casino, previously a billiards establishment in Nashua. This New York-based gaming and hospitality firm has proposed moving Gate City to the Sheraton Nashua, a hotel well-known for its castle-like and medieval European aesthetic.
After acquiring Sheraton Nashua in October 2022, Delaware North presented plans to the city for expanding the hotel to incorporate a sizable 93,000-square-foot casino along with a multistory parking structure. This construction is set to take place south of the present hotel, adjacent to a small pond on the existing parking lot.
Transforming Hotel into Casino
Delaware North has a proven track record of transforming hotel properties into casino venues.
In 2016, Delaware North collaborated with Suffolk Off-Track Betting Corporation to convert a former 227-room hotel on Long Island into a video lottery casino. Jake’s 58 opened in early 2017 within the renovated Marriott Islandia, featuring over 1,000 gaming devices and updated hotel accommodations.
For the New Hampshire project, Delaware North is not demolishing any sections of the Sheraton Nashua; instead, they aim to expand the current structure to include gaming facilities. Recently, the Sheraton Nashua underwent extensive renovations to its guest rooms and suites, a multimillion-dollar refurbishment officials termed a “gut job.”
Despite these updates, the Sheraton Nashua’s Tudor-style exterior, including its moat-like gatehouse porte-cochere, will remain unchanged.
According to state regulations, New Hampshire casinos are required to nominate two charitable organizations daily as beneficiaries. These nonprofits share 35% of the day’s total gaming earnings.
The state collects 31% of the casino revenue, 2.5% is designated for the New Hampshire Gaming Commission to address regulatory expenses, and 0.25% is allocated to the Governor’s Commission on Addiction, Treatment, and Prevention. The remaining revenue of 31.25% is retained by the casinos.
Castle-Inspired Casinos
If the casino relocation is approved by Nashua and state authorities, the Gate City Casino at Sheraton Nashua will not be the only castle-themed casino in the United States.
The most renowned castle-themed casino is the Excalibur Hotel & Casino on the Las Vegas Strip, operated by MGM Resorts. Another lesser-known option is the Cliff Castle Casino Hotel, a tribal gaming venue located in Camp Verde, Arizona.
The Golden Nugget in Atlantic City, initially launched as Trump’s Castle in 1985, never truly resembled a castle, despite its name. Donald Trump adopted this name after facing copyright threats from Caesars when he contemplated branding it as Trump Palace, a title that Caesars argued closely mirrored Caesars Palace.
