The state gambling authorities in New Jersey have levied a fine of $32,500 on DraftKings after discovering that the sportsbook accepted unauthorized bets, including wagers placed on events that had already finished and on teams that are not allowed under state regulations, as reported by The Press of Atlantic City.
In a letter detailing the infractions, the Division of Gaming Enforcement stated that DraftKings violated multiple provisions of New Jersey’s sports betting laws by permitting illegal wagers, providing markets featuring incorrect players, and accepting past-posted bets.
The agency highlighted several specific incidents, including an NCAA “Season Win Totals” market from August 2021 that mistakenly featured Rutgers University, an April and May 2024 error when DraftKings accepted bets on the WNBA’s Connecticut Sun, and a lapse in November 2024 that enabled gamblers to wager on NCAA women’s volleyball matches that had already taken place.
Additionally, regulators pointed to a June 2024 incident involving an F1 Austrian Grand Prix market where a participant’s name was misspelled, as well as an August 2024 soccer match that was abandoned at halftime and subsequently rescheduled, leading to further wagering discrepancies.
Although DraftKings nullified all affected bets and returned funds to customers in each instance, regulators concluded that the frequency and severity of these infractions warranted financial penalties and emphasized the operator’s obligation to uphold rigorous compliance measures.
