An unexpected find unfolded in Manhattan on Tuesday when authorities uncovered an underground gambling operation. Fire Department of New York (FDNY) officials were investigating a standard complaint regarding unauthorized lithium battery charging in Chinatown.

The uncertified lithium-ion batteries, notorious for causing several deadly fires in New York City over the years, were just the initial discovery among multiple layers of illicit activities unveiled by FDNY inspectors in the hazardous basement of 118-120 Elizabeth St.

Additionally, inspectors found five cramped bedrooms furnished with 10 cots, hot plates, and space heaters, yet lacking any emergency exits.

“Given the labyrinthine layout of the cellar, absence of alternative exits, and significant clutter, all sleeping quarters posed considerable life safety hazards,” the FDNY report stated.

Betting with Their Safety

The inspectors also uncovered three storage rooms overflowing with counterfeit Prada merchandise and other flammable items. In the front hall, 17 illegal slot machines and a couch were lined up.

“What our Fire Prevention team discovered was a disaster waiting to occur,” stated FDNY Commissioner Robert S. Tucker.

The FDNY subsequently requested assistance from the city’s Department of Buildings, which issued an evacuation order for the cellar’s occupants. Meanwhile, the NYPD Vice Squad seized the slot machines and counterfeit items.

Two FDNY citations and two criminal summonses were issued, although no arrests were made.
