Christian Gonzalez, cornerback for the Patriots, has joined the ranks of the highest-paid defensive backs in the NFL.

This deal was a long time coming, but Gonzalez and the Patriots have finally agreed to a four-year contract with over $100M in guarantees.

A New Deal on the Eve of a New Season

Gonzalez, who was a standout player during the postseason leading to the Super Bowl last season, signed the new deal just before the start of the new season. He showcased his elite downfield coverage ability against Seattle in a rematch of the final game.

During the summer, Gonzalez chose to hold out on the field to avoid injury as he awaited his record contract.

Owner Robert Kraft had reduced payroll as the team’s dynasty was winding down, but Gonzalez emerged as a top player deserving of a lucrative long-term deal.

Slashing the Payroll

Gonzalez’s size, speed, and ball skills make him a game-changer on the field, especially in the playoffs where he has proven his ability to shut down top receivers.

At just 24 years old, Gonzalez was the team’s first-round pick in 2023 and is now among the highest-paid defensive backs in the league.

Next up for the Patriots will be negotiating a new contract for MVP runner-up QB Drake Maye after the upcoming season.
