In what seems like a deliberate attack on Caesars Entertainment and MGM Resorts International, the National Indian Gaming Commission (NIGC) has criticized these commercial operators for their recent ransomware attacks.
The NIGC, a federal regulatory agency overseen by the Department of Interior, believes its cybersecurity approach is superior to that of its commercial rivals.
According to a recent statement by the commission, NIGC utilizes a progression of layered defensive mechanisms to protect data, information, and information systems.
Caesars and MGM were recently targeted by a group called “Scattered Spider.” Caesars admitted to paying an undisclosed amount to end the attack, while MGM’s response resulted in chaos lasting 10 days throughout the US.
NIGC’s Valid Points
NIGC highlighted its three-pronged approach to cybersecurity, including administrative, physical, and technical controls.
When it comes to cybersecurity, prevention is always better than cure. MGM’s vulnerabilities were known before the attack. Gaming operators are tempting targets for cyber criminals due to the large amount of sensitive customer data they hold.
“Cyber related attacks have been increasing in recent years and will continue. To reduce risk, organizations should employ a layered, redundant approach to cybersecurity,” stated the NIGC.
Commercial operators may benefit from adopting the cybersecurity strategies used by tribal rivals. Cybersecurity companies prioritize revenue and are unlikely to withhold services from competitors.
NIGC Should Exercise More Tact
While NIGC has reason to celebrate the attacks on its commercial rivals, it should remember the importance of grace. Tribal gaming entities have not reported large-scale cyber attacks, but with nearly $41 billion in revenue generated by Native American casinos last year, they may attract cyber criminals.
Ransomware attacks are increasing in frequency and becoming more sophisticated, making it challenging for advanced cybersecurity software to fully protect against hackers.
