Jeannie Hovland, the Vice Chair of the National Indian Gaming Commission (NIGC), has received the esteemed Woman Warrior Award from the Tribal Gaming Protection Network at the Women in Tribal Gaming Symposium.

This accolade was awarded during a luncheon on May 15 in Oklahoma City, recognizing influential figures in tribal gaming who demonstrate exceptional professionalism, resilience, and a commitment to advancing the industry, all while supporting Native communities.

An enrolled member of the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe of South Dakota, Hovland was honored for her years of dedication to Indian Country, advocating for tribal sovereignty and enhanced opportunities for Native communities and women throughout the nation.

“It is a profound honor to receive the Woman Warrior Award and to stand alongside so many inspiring women making a significant impact in their communities and the tribal gaming sector, ” Hovland stated during the event. “This serves as a powerful reminder of the strength of the many women who lead, advocate, and inspire daily.”

At the NIGC, Hovland continues to be instrumental in overseeing regulations and shaping policies within tribal gaming, with a focus on promoting sovereignty and economic empowerment for tribal nations.

The award presentation formed part of the expansive Women in Tribal Gaming Symposium, which included discussions, breakout sessions, and networking opportunities designed to enhance professional development for women engaged in the tribal gaming industry.
