A well-planned strategy is needed to witness the Tropicana’s implosion in person, matching the strategy and coordination of the implosion itself.

According to a press release from Tropicana owner Bally’s and the Oakland A’s, there will be “no public viewing areas” for the implosion. The implosion of the Rat Pack-era resort’s two remaining towers is scheduled for 2:30 a.m. on Oct. 9.

The early hour of the implosion helps maintain safety and minimize disruption, allowing for the complete closure of streets and sidewalks in front of neighboring casino resorts.

Viewing the implosion from the MGM Grand, New York-New York, Oyo, Excalibur, or Luxor before the closures start might be possible. However, these properties may take precautions to prevent crowds in their parking lots due to safety and insurance concerns.

Other viewing options include watching the implosion on TV, as Las Vegas stations KSNV, KLAS, and KVVU will broadcast live coverage. The implosion will be preceded by a fireworks show and a drone show.

Birth of a Detonation

Controlled Demolition Inc. will use 2,200 lbs. of explosives to bring down the Tropicana’s two 23-story towers. The Club Tower will require more explosives than the Paradise Tower due to its construction materials.

Who’s Paying?

The $1.2 million cost of the implosion will come from various sources, including public funding and private financing. The implosion is part of a larger project to build a new baseball stadium for the Oakland A’s on the site.

What About the Ceiling?

The Tropicana casino’s ornate stained-glass ceiling will be preserved and incorporated into the Neon Museum’s new space in the Arts District downtown.
