In a country where online casinos lead the private sector in the iGaming industry, a similar trend can be observed among provincial lottery corporations, as highlighted in the latest annual report from the Atlantic Lottery Corporation released last month.

For the fiscal year 2024-25, Atlantic Lottery returned CAD $498.7 million in profit, reflecting an increase of $11.7 million compared to the previous year. President and CEO Dallas McCready emphasized that all profits are reinvested into the four Atlantic provinces in Canada, supporting crucial services like healthcare, education, and infrastructure.
Among the reported profits, $243.1 million originated from the Destination segment, which includes play at Atlantic Lottery’s Red Shores locations in P.E.I. and all video lottery sites across the area.
Growth of CAD $11.7 Million in Earnings
Meanwhile, $255.6 million was generated from retail and iLottery operations. The retail segment encompasses sales at physical retail outlets, covering Draws, Scratch’N Win, Pro-Line, and other tickets. iLottery comprises all purchases made via alc.ca, including Draw tickets like Lotto Max and online casino games.
Breaking it down further, Atlantic Lottery allocated $165.1 million to Nova Scotia, $154.6 million to New Brunswick, $153.1 million to Newfoundland and Labrador, and $25.9 million to Prince Edward Island.
Approaching $500 Million
In 2024-25, Atlantic Lottery disbursed $461.2 million in prizes, representing an increase of nearly $14 million compared to the prior fiscal year.
“While specific statistics for Atlantic Canada are unavailable, our research indicates that casino games are highly appealing to online players in our region,” stated Greg Weston, a spokesperson for Atlantic Lottery. “We see continued growth potential in this sector, which has shown significant expansion in recent years.”
In Ontario, the online casino segment commands an impressive 84% share of the CAD $8.9 billion revenue generated in September, as per data from iGaming Ontario.
Details regarding the revenue distribution for the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation’s igaming platform were not disclosed.
Grey Market Continues to Prevail
Atlantic Lottery operates as the sole legal provider of online gaming and sports betting in the region. However, a considerable portion of the population still opts to gamble on grey market platforms.
In the year 2024-25, Atlantic Lottery increased its online gaming market share in the region from 22% to 34%. Their five-year objective aims to achieve a 50% share of the regional online gaming market, addressing the estimated CAD $200 million that annually escapes the area through illegal gambling platforms.
Broadening their range of online casino offerings will be instrumental in achieving this goal.
