Ontario Market Experiences 8% Increase in Overall Bets in August

The Ontario iGaming sector experienced significant growth in August, setting the stage for an eventful September and October in sports betting with an 8% increase in total cash bets compared to the previous month.

8% Surge in Earnings

According to the recent financial data released by iGaming Ontario, the market reached CAD $8.14 billion in total cash bets in August, rising from CAD $7.56 billion in July. The total revenue stood at CAD $335 million, reflecting an 8% month-over-month rise from CAD $311 million in July.

The last time Ontario’s total cash bets surpassed the $8 billion mark was in May, where the figure stood at CAD $8.06 billion, coinciding with a peak revenue of CAD $338 million.

Active player accounts grew by 7% in August, reaching 1,1016, with the average revenue per active player account hitting CAD $330, a 1% increase from July.

Growth in Player Accounts

Diving deeper into the betting stats, the casino sector reported CAD $7.22 billion in bets, marking a 7% increase from July and claiming an impressive 89% market share. The previous record for casino wagers was CAD $6.95 billion in May.

On the revenue side, online casino generated CAD $267.8 million in August, a 6% rise month-over-month and securing an 80% market share—setting a new record for casino revenue.

Sports betting exhibited an 11% month-over-month growth in total cash wagers, tallying CAD $765 million, resulting in a 9% market share. Revenue from sports betting reached CAD $60.2 million, a 14% increase from July, contributing to an 18% market share.

Ongoing Casino Dominance

In July, iGaming Ontario reported a 10% decline in sports betting handle and revenue, making August’s rebound particularly noteworthy.

Cash wagers for peer-to-peer poker in August reached CAD $151 million, a 9% increase from July, while accounting for a 2% market share. On the revenue side, poker generated CAD $6.8 million, representing a 15% rise from July, also holding a 2% market share.
