While summer typically brings a lull in sports betting activity, the online casino’s market share leadership in Ontario’s regulated sector remains a key focus, as highlighted by iGaming Ontario’s July performance report released today.

Overall Handle Sees 4% Growth

Total cash wagers within the province reached CAD $7.56 billion in July, up from CAD $7.25 billion in June, marking a four percent increase. Monthly revenue stood at CAD $311 million, representing a slight one percent month-on-month growth.

The number of active player accounts dipped by six percent, totaling 948,000, while average revenue per active account rose eight percent to $328.

Breaking it down further, casino wagers amounted to CAD $6.73 billion, reflecting a six percent rise since June, capturing an impressive 89 percent of the market share.

Casino Sector Prevails

In terms of revenue, online casinos generated CAD $252.3 million in July, a four percent month-over-month growth, resulting in an 81 percent market share.

Conversely, sports betting encountered a ten percent reduction in cash wagers, totaling CAD $688 million and holding a nine percent market share. Revenue from sports betting reached CAD $52.7 million, down by ten percent for a 17 percent market share.

Cash wagers for peer-to-peer poker in July were CAD $139 million, a five percent increase from the previous month, claiming two percent of the market share. The revenue from poker hit CAD $5.9 million, marking a ten percent growth, also with a two percent market share.

10% Decrease in Sports Betting

This dip aligns with the strong performance of the online casino sector in Ontario, prompting licensed operators to continually enhance their offerings.

Recently, Caesars Entertainment has unveiled yet another exclusive slot game in Ontario – Caesars Treasure Trio.

Ontario now licenses 50 iGaming operators, and the total number of gaming websites in the province has risen to 87.

The total market handle for July 2024 was CAD $6.09 billion.
